Looking at buying a 2004 of above anyone any info on them are they a good car what's the life on the engine like as it has 144k miles on it

a lot of known issues with these cars heres a few
1.injectors lots of issues with them
2.dual mass flywheel
3.crankshaft pulley is a dual mass pulley and can fail get seized on the crank causing damage to it
4.suspension bushes in the rear
5. egr valves
6.wiper linkage
7.engine wiring problems

you would be better off with a passat or mondeo tbh

had 02 omega omega and egr valve and maf sensor had to be exchanged trough my ownership
other than that it wasn't to bad
the fellow next door has zafira and he is fitting new egr valve...

Wise words.
Alternatively : mazda 6
Honda accord
Honda was late to come with They'r own diesel engine but it was worth the wait.

The 1.7 and 2.2 Honda diesel engines are fantastic. Think Brian has the 2.2 in his civic. You can get nice gains and more responsiveness from a safe remap on them.

not sure if same diesel engine is in both the civic and accord but i know of a few lads with accords that have had a lot of trouble with turbos and clutches...
certainly not bomb proof like the petrol engines

Think I'll be going for a mondeo had a look at a few now and from what iv heard they are reliable

mondeo is a great car but not without issues either i work on them so have experience of the known issues
1.injectors,they are made by delphi and can give trouble listen to the car at idle both hot and cold if its lumpy or rough sounding it a good indictation that it needs injectors bout 250 each
2.flywheel.listen at idle and engine shut off for a metalic rattle if you hear it it need a flywheel bout 500-600 for parts
3. some of them gave turbo trouble but not that common
other than that,[ which actually when i think about it is comin to any diesel car of any make built from 00 up ]they dont give trouble and are by far the best drivers car of any diesel on the road
