Does anyone know this legacy as I'm thinking of buying it?

Had a look at it on sunday last, it's not mint but the price reflects this.
Took it for a spin, car felt tight with no knocks, whining or grinding from anywhere.
It did feel like there was slight misses when accelerating through 4.5k revs, is this an indication of something serious?
There was a small whisp of either steam or smoke coming from the near the right hand-side turbocharger, again, whats the likely cause and how bad a sign is this?

Something doesn't look right in the engine bay. I had a 99 and it didn't have those thick pipes running across the inlet manifold. Also no a/c unit which came standard on these cars.

Misses could be dodgy plug, leads, maf or more serious, detonation from running unmapped on 95 with a couple of mods.

May be wrong but looks as if the engine has been replaced on the cheap and things like air con werent refitted so the "wisp" you noticed may be a dodgy gasket on the turbo or it may simply just not be fitted 100%.

There's a lad on here b4soon from galway who might take a closer look at it for you, I'm sure he'll see this thread later.
 
Intercooler is in bad condition for the milage its saying it has
The dump valve could be throwing oil out?
As robbie said those big pipes dont look right
ad another grand and you will get a much nicer one
 
Spend more for a better car, in the long run its a much cheaper option. Even though car prices are low, maintaining and fixing them isn't gone down the same amount in value.
 
I'd imagine the "miss" you describe is whats known as the VOD. Is it a flat spot in boost from at 4000rpm? To be honest i'd walk away from it-as Robbie has said above-never seen those thick pipes on a B4-and one of them doesn't seem to be connected to anything. You could buy it for €1500 and spend another 2k easily trying to clean it up and sort out any issues-thats 3.5k for a 99 B4 that looks to be a very basic soec and has manky wheels and spoiler on it. No splitter kit either. There's a Red 02 blitzen saloon on donedeal at about 3k I think-has to be worth a look.
 
The current owner said he removed the air-con, I think the engine is original as the mounts didnt look like they had ever had a spanner put to them.
Is there any methods or tricks for telling whether this b4 is going to throw the bottom end bearing, box, diff, turbo at any stage other than the normal signs of wear and damage etc?

If there's anyone who isn't far from spiddel and wants to make a few bucks out of checking out this car for me I'd really appreciate it, I'd give them whatever they wanted for their time within reason as it'll be the cheaper option in the long run. :thumbsup:

Id take a handy subaru also, if ye know where theres one hiding!
 
Mate, u obviously hav ur doubts bout this car otherwise u wudnt have posted...d guys have advised u 2 walk away unless its 100%. dats gud advice i tink as plenty of motors out dare at gud prices. Might b cheap now but i guarantee u dat ull pay in d long run. :hand:
 
The car i have now is a different car to when i bought it in 2007 for 8500
I jumped in and bought it without knowing anything about it
Turned out my car needed a major overhall
Shock seized nightmare to replace at the time very rare and so expensive
Cam seals went
Loads of electrical faults
Timing belt pullys tensioner waterpump the lot had to be changed it was a week from snapping when it went into limp mode which saved my engine
Alloys leaking so new wheels and tyres
Discs and pads all round
And loads more in the first year and a half
All this happened before i found this site belive me if i had seen this site first i would not have bought it
Nearly 6 years on and im still spending money
So just make sure you do your homework because it cost me big time thinking it would be grand

at the end of the day its your money so buy it if you want it, if it turns out to be a bucket of sh*t and needs 2 grand to put right then you've only yourself to blame....
