overboost UPDATE

Paul555RA

Petrolheads
ok having an issue with my v4 wrx got a boost gauge installed and its peaking at just over 1.2 bar and settling down to 1.1 which if i hold it at full throttle it will go into safe mode at 0.5 bar and takes 10-15 mins at normal driving to come out again if i control it with my right foot and dont let it go over 1 bar i have no probs was looking today and it seems it has a vf22 fitted i could be wrong but i thought as standard these had a td04 the vacuum lines seem to be different to my last couple of impreza's as well but they were sti's for example the vacuum off the wastegate doesnt join the other one coming from the turbo with a t piece they both just head back towards the solenoid separately cant find anything online for my version which shows the denso marked piece as well as well as the solenoid so if anyone with a v4 wrx could throw up a pic of the lines it would be much appreciated

Re: overboost

It could have a 3 port boost solenoid that why its piped like that. Have you a decat fitted?

Re: overboost

the top metal bit with denso on it has 3 pipes coming of it the plastic one below had 2 not sure which is the actual solenoid there is def no decat emissions were perfect for nct

If there is no tee piece at the turbo it should have a 3 port solenoid, how long has it bee doing this ?Any work done recently ?

Re: overboost

only work done since ive had it is full service and timing belt change and few small bits for nct no engine work for nct though only got boost gauge fitted couple weeks ago and thats when i seen it i changed the dump valve the day after the boost gauge was fitted as it was leaking and was causing hunting on warm startup but hasnt been doing that since i changed it i put on another hks ssqv only thing there though its a small nipple coming off the dump valve and a large on on the block so ive a load of tape on dump valve side to get a seal

Re: overboost

i can hear a hissing coming from the back of the boost gauge at full boost but not at any other time they have that plumbed in on the pipe coming from the engine block to the immediate left of the throttle cable coming back just before the large round platic piece on that pipe

Re: overboost

You need to have someone look at it as it could be anything really. The hissing from the boost gauge should not be happening though thats for sure

Re: overboost

cheers baz karma ill try get it in somewhere its just finding the time to be without it at the min is tricky ill take the gauge off at the weekend and see if i can sort that

Re: overboost

The gauge could actually be faulty, where about are you in the country?

Im in Sligo the gauge seems to be ok judging by boost cut anyway holds at exactly 0.5 bar

From memory v4 wrx should have a 2port.

V4 STi had 3 port.

Factory turbo was a vf24.
[/quote]
Cheers dave may look into that to so not 100% its a vf22 as the writing is quite faded but looks like it from what little i can see

Re: overboost

Ok my maf has now given up the ghost so need to get it replaced but would be faulty maf cause it to overboost slightly

Re: overboost

still havent had a chance to sort this and i need to replace the maf now but this is a few pics of the setup if it sheds any light for anyone
three pipes coming off this silver piece which i assume is the boost solenoid

these are the pipes which go to it, these 2 off the turbo

and this one from the manifold

then there is this plastic piece underneath the solenoid

which has this pipe going to it

this is the same pipe that has been split to go to the boost gauge the clear pipe is heading to the gauge

Re: overboost

ok update on this fitted a second hand maf last night reset the ecu and it has made it a lot better but im not sure still if its right in 1st-3rd its fine boost climbing steadily and holding a hair over 1 bar but in 4th and 5th its still peaking at 1.2-1.3 bar and then dropping back to a hair over 1 bar but hasnt been going into safe mode (but have only driven car on short test drive) will take it for a longer spin in a while do these figures sound about normal for this car and turbo setup or am i right to still be concerned

Re: overboost

did some more research and car setup could be right for an early v4 it has a vf22 (90% sure writing faded) yellow injectors, 3 port bcs and an orange label maf but not heaqring anything 100% either way about whether set up is right

Yeah def a wrx haven't looked up applied model code but based on brakes interior and dash its def a v4 wrx but on a side note i had a look at the ecu and it's an 1s ecu and from what little I can find about it it seems to be meant to run what I have

More than likely a vf23 on yours , Vf24 came on Version 4 sti

Some V3 Wrx's had VF22.

V3 and V4 sti be vf23. Some had vf24.

V4 wrx had vf24

Maybe a few mix ups on the assembly line :multijump:
