Overheating problem AGAIN

yes engine was running. Thanks for the offer of the rad. The car is going off the road for 6 months as Im going back to Florida in a few days. I think I will have to leave fixing this problem until I come home again.

i dont think if you leave the cap off that it will preesurize your system, if you rev it with cap off it will just surge out. subarus can be tricky to get air out of especia;lly if heater rad has been emptied. fill her up to the top and start her, leave cap off, and add more as she wants it, when it seems liuke she has enuf put the cap bak on and make sure ther is some in resevoir in wing, turn your heaters on full power on hot to windscreen. keep her running and let her heat up, the best way to know if you have no circulation trouble is when the stat opens your bottom hose should start to get warm.. mind your fingers with the fans do :wall:

I did all of the above except for putting the heaters on or feeling if the bottom rad hose was hot. I will do that now and see what happens.

OK left hand side of rad is hot, right hand side (including the bottom rad hose) is cold. Temp just keeps climbing after the fans come on. I had the heaters on full hot but they just blew cold air. Temp on Power FC was 98 degrees.

:ponder: :dunno:

The waterpump is a very reliable unit on Subaru's, unlike VAG and BMW. I have never replaced a pump on a Subaru yet, nor heard of a problem. As far as I know there is no reccomended replacement interval by Subaru.

John

I was only going on my experience from what a Service Manager used to recommend. This was a good few years ago though. Even my mechanic said that the waterpump should be changed when the T-belt is done. I'll ask him why when I'm speaking to him again

If the left side of the rad is hot and the right side is cold doesnt that suggest that the rad is maybe blocked?

Rad Flush? No I havent tried that? Obviously it cleans out the rad but is it a special type of fluid?

How do I get rid of the air if indeed it is air trapped? I have tried everything already suggested in the above posts.

if iam not mistaken, but one side needs to be cooler then the other,as for the flow of the water through the rad...one side will be hot that has come through the rad,the other that has come from the engine...?

hi, when you put the thermostat in the boiling water it is 100 degrees. you need to make sure it opens at least before 95. did the water really boil(as in steam from cap) or did the guage go to red(air lock/wrong reading from temp sensor). these can be a right pain to bleed sometimes. if your near dublin give me a shout.

The water in the kettle wasnt boiling just hot and the thermostat still opened. Its a brand new thermostat.

had the cap off the header tank trying to see if air that was trapped would get out and thats when the coolant boiled out and spilled. The temp gauge in the car was going up to 3/4 and the Power FC was telling me 108 degrees and climbing.

How can a coolant system be so difficult to bleed if indeed all my problems are caused by trapped air?

Throw some rad flush in there. you'll get it in any auto factor, the instructions are on the tin
A simple thing might just do the trick. If it has been parked up for a while there might be a build up of rust type crap in the rad :dunno:

wow whooooooo!

she seems to be back to normal! Jeez, these cars are a bitch for trapped air in the cooling system!
I had to pull all the top radiator hoses off then I heard the hiss of air escaping....refilled coolant and job done. The funny part is i had the bottom rad hose off 3 times trying to get the air out

Thanks to everybody who replied with help. Special thanks to Keith Dublin and RS-RA.
