lads a friend of mine has a bugeye wrx and it broke down last night, it over heated and the needle went straight to the top.
has anybody got any idea what the problem could be

Seized thermostat is where i'd start but it could well be the head gasket

Was it in the red for long or did he switch the engine right off? Check the water level in the header tank.

Steve.

same is happening to minebut i have a classic my water pump was fucked so changed that and still have the same problem but only when i drive it hard if i drive it normal its fine :angry1:

took my car out for first time since nct 2 weeks ago and the fooker overheated on me !!!!
head is wrecked now!!!
:wall: :wall: :wall:

Some times you can take out the thermostat, the car will run colder.

Might stop it over heating,(done this to a 03 Primera last week,

Uncle of the wifes he couldnt afford to spend any money on the car).

Done the trick and its going grand for him.

so the water pump is going constantly? pumping coolant around the engine?

Think thats how it works, makes the engine run a bit colder.
The thermostat could have bein at fault, once removed it done the trick( no more
over heating.) Could be worth a go.

Taking out the thermostat will work fine if thats the problem.

The pump is going constant anyway Andy, the thermostat is only controlling the flow of coolant to and from the engine block, and by doing so keeps it at a steady temp. Its a door to the rad that opens and closes constantly. If it seizes then coolant can't reach the rad and the car overheats. Removing it is fine and you wont notice a difference around town but on the motorway your temp gauge will just drop off back to cold.

Race bikes and a lot of race cars don't use a thermostat or a rad fan because they are flat out all the time so no need for them.

I run a Crucial Racing Coolsafe thermostat, which opens at a lower temp and if it fails it locks open instead of closed

Cheers Phil

So is there any harm in doing this longer term? Why have a thermostat at all?

Don't think there would be any harm in the long term but i'm open to correction there. The reason for the thermostat is to keep engine temp and coolant at a steady level and without the thermostat the engine would have to heat the entire cooling system from the start. This would mean it would take longer to reach running temp and also longer to have warm air inside the car.

Without it the oil and coolant would be colder and not at their ideal working temp. and oil temp can effect you engine so........

Another thing is, that the interior heating wouldn't be so efficient as norma - especially in winter LOL

i had this problem with my bugeye and it was leaking slightly at the rad fitted a replacement and it was fine
