just wonderin if anyone can give me some advice, when i was comin down from mondello monday the temp gauge shot to the roof so to be safe i got a tow down,a mechanic told me to change the thermostat so i got it changed and now its fine when i'm drivin but the gauge goes up when i stop, also when i'm drivin theres loads of heat inside the car but when the gauge goes up i've no heat!
any input is appreciated!!

When the car is hot pop the bonnet and listen for leaks. Check the water level in the head tank (when engine is cooled down) to see if its loosing water anywhere. feel the top hose going to the rad, I think if its a thermostat not opening the return hose (top) will be cold when the engine is hot. you can take out the thermostat and put it in boiling water to check if it opens too.

I'd say the first thing to do is get a pro to drain her and fill with fresh coolant and make sure there is no air in the system!
Best of luck man!

Sounds like you might have an air lock/bubble if there's not heat in the car even though the temp guage is half way up.

i had a similar problem. Started the car leave it runnin, set the heater to full and hot inside the car.

watch the temp guage, as the car is running find the top water hose

coming out from car bulk head/heater matrix unclip it, pour water in slowly allowing air bubbles to work there way out of the system.

give one of the othe hoses a squeeze every so often, when the hose in your hand starts overflow reclip.

Hope this helps.

that was the first thing i thought of cos i work in a rover garage and i see about ten head gaskets gone every day but i'm prayin its just airlocked

sti 9029: To be honest air locks , pin-pri*k hole in a rubber hose, blocked rad etc....
are common enough in Scooby's.

I would imagine it's something like that, get it checked and let us know

Niall.

it's not lookin good lads, its not an airlock so the lads reckon its either something leaking(water pump) or else one of the heads cracked!
f£ck mondello anyway :new_2gunsfiring_v1: ah no its my own fault i should have kept a better eye on it on the day!!

neither of these would give the symtoms you have. if the impeller on the waterpump was loose maybe, but subaru impellers dont come loose like vw, bmw etc. if you had a cracked head it would be building up major pressure in the system. have you checked for combustion gases in the coolant system. still sounds like an air lock, have had one or two that didn't bleed easy, although if your mechanic works for rover he'll know all about airlocks. whereabouts is the car

well it's official,my head gasket is gone, still dunno which one but i'll know this evenin,so i've a few options:
1 sell it the way it is,,,anyone interested??
2 buy the parts and get the lot done, gaskets, timing belt water pump the lot
3 buy a second hand engine and put it in
4 go into a ball in the corner and cry!!

all suggestions in here please!!

Dont panic just yet, see can you get a price on getting the head gasket done.

It might be easier and cheaper than the other options. :subaru:

got a price their for headset, timing belt kit and water pump,€650 all in and know a lad who'll do the lot for about €700,,what ye reckon?
