Panel filter or induction cone?

Actually read the stickie this time so hopefully this will go better :imnewhere:

1. Subaru model - Impreza
2. Model Year - 1998
3. Model shape - Classic wagon
4. Model type - emm, Turbo 2000 with EJ25
5. Version - V6 I think?
6. Model Origin - UK Model

So I've been flicking through Andy Forest's website looking at the various stages of tuning that he offers, and I noticed that in the majority of the lower level stages he was suggesting a K&N panel filter and that induction cones only really got mentioned when talking much higher power levels.

It got me wondering about what peoples experiences are on here and if one is recommended over another (as some cars can be very sensitive to cones and the oils used in them).

So what do people favour on here for relatively mild levels of tuning?

Stick a Green Cotton filter in it... Your standard UK top mount will be an issue before panel filter

Fair enough. Just have a lad who owes me some money who also happens to be selling an Apexi filter so thought it might be one way of getting my money out of him.

UK intercooler that restrictive? Whats a decent handy upgrade?

Checking compression and camera inspection of piston type to make sure its not from a normally aspirated is what your first move and check needs to be.

Compression test is top of the list for the mechanic next time its in with him. Will have to say it to him about the camera inspection as I don't know if thats a typical garage tool?

The cone filter wouldn't be fitted for a while (if at all) - just mentioned it as I'm waiting a couple of weeks on this lad to pay me back so I thought that if the filter was possibly going to be added later it might speed up the process of me seeing my money back in one shape or another :wall:

Yeah what Dave is saying is spot on, you really need to try determine exactly what you have as a start point before you think of mods.

All being well...usually what guys do as a basic tune up is decat/system, fuel pump, plugs, panel filter and map....
But with the mapping being expensive so to make the most of it, a lot of Uk turbo owners will spec it up like a V5/v6 sti, so on top of the exhaust, pump, plugs and filter they will stick a vf28 and sti top mount and map then... The Uk heads won't be as good as the Sti ones but a nice gain can be seen with those few upgrades... Iirc a guy named Richie in here with a white UK Done the exact Sti spruce up and mapped with Andy F and I beleive the car was thought to be up at 300-320bhp..

I personally don't think you are making the full benefit of the mapping cost by using the Vf28 on a 2.5 bottom end, but everyone has their own opinions

Just be carefull with the apexi/ blitz / hks stuff as a lot of the time it can be knock off

Don't worry, I'm definitely not ignoring the sound advice from Dave. When sat at home on the weekend with a laptop its hard not to start wandering about and wondering if this and that would be good. I'm hoping I have the proper lower comp bottom end, and don't plan on doing anything much until this is confirmed first. Just doing homework in the meantime

Thanks for the pointers. Had been wondering about the fuel pump alright, and good to know what intercooler upgrades are handy. Just had new plugs fitted at the service so must find out what ones now.

I hear what you're saying, but I'm not after ultimate power so based on other information I think the faster spool-up time of the VF28 will suit needs for another good while. Its something that can be done further down the line when other things have been covered first. The money saved for now would probably go a long way towards the exhaust, intercooler and fuel pump upgrades which I'd rank higher in the list right now.
