Possible New Owner of a B4 Legacy

Evening all,

As the title suggests, I'm on the hunt for a B4. Mate of mine (some may know him, Derek Preston and before him, Rob Farrell) had a 99 Legacy B4 that I drove down to Mondello one year for a show n' shine or some other rubbish, but I'll never forget the drive. Absolutely gorgeous car, no road noise, bags of torque and power and comfortable. My kind of car.

Always been into Jap performance cars, I'm driving a Rev 5 MR2 Turbo at the moment with all the bolt-ons (HKS Power FC, HKS Intercooler, Kakimoto exhaust, XS power cat and HKS filter) but the stiff ride, road/tyre noise and lack of room has finally broken me so I'll be selling up once she flies through the NCT.

So, I just had a few questions for you fine gents:

1. Are the later, Revision D models worth the extra outlay in cash?

2. Is there anything I should be looking for when going to purchase one? eg. on MR2s, the balljoints and droplinks can be eaten away fairly quickly

3. The MR2 was ok to work on regarding servicing etc, how about the Legacys?

Cheers for any and all info!

1. Yes, slightly bigger turbos and better ecu, like any car, last of its generation will always be best.

2. Shock top mounts, gearboxs can give centre diff problems but not so much in the rev d, make sure to do a full code check, rev a-c maf's are tempermental bt cheap to replace, rev d maf doesn't give many problems but is more expensive to replace. In 4 years of owning a rev A, I had had to replace the box (gone when I bought the car), 1 maf, a track rod end and a solenoid. Was a very reliable car overall.

3. Bit tight to work in but its no space shuttle :icon_lol:

Hi Steve,

If you can afford the bit extra, definitely go rev d. I used to have a rev a wagon and the rev d I have now is a much better handling car. As far as I'm aware, the chassis was stiffened in the last revision. (in both wagon and saloon)
I think the turbos are actually smaller than the earlier revisons to improve torque low down and improve fuel economy. Also, if it has the bumper with the lip kit, it looks savage!

Best o luck with the hunt

Agree with you regarding the last marque being the strongest.

Thanks for all the info guys, greatly appreciated
