Hey all,

Something's been bothering me for a while.... :ponder2:

Before I took my car off the road I was getting what sounded like a noise from the diff... a knockin noise (a not too loud thump to be specific)... only when on and off the throttle!

The cars a V6 Sti... anyone had a similiar problem or any idea what the cause is??? Diff mounts??? :dontknow: The car did have a light curb smack on the drivers side rear before i bought it and had a new hub fitted. Aidan Field has since replaced bearings in the back and said there was no movement or play in the hub or suspension, so I'm kinda ruling that out and thinking it's the diff????

Any thoughts??? Thanks all!!

J...

It's "unlocked"... or in the free position. I've never had the right condtions (snow/gravel) to have it in the locked position (50/50 splt) and know the damage that can be done by driving it in the dry in "locked" mode. I can't speak for the arsohole that had the car before me... but it's a noise that only came into it a few months beore I took it off the raod and I'd owned it with no troubles for a few years before that... so had he damaged it I woukd have known soon after buying... I hope!

Hi Jamie,

This may sound stupid but did you check the back brakes, they could be binding.

Regards, Jay.

Jamie do you mean just one hard thump or knock
on hard acceleration or do you mean it's like clunk, clunk, clunk
as you accelerate.

If it's just one knock...........it's more than likley the rubber thing at the end of the
drive shaft that connects to the rear diff ...................(excuse my technical explanation )

If it's clunk, clunk, clunk, on hard acceleration it's the rear diff starting to go............if you sit 2 or 3 of
your mates on the back seat and floor it , you'd here it much louder.

Niall.

It's just one hard thump/knock as you let off the throttle and then on again! It's not a contiuous clunk as you drive or turn so I don't think the diff is knackered. I figured it was the diff mounts or something like the rubber thing at the end of the drive shaft... as you mentioned Niall! Thanks fella... it's good to get some feedback
