Power washing an engine bay...? Advisable or not?

Hi folks,

The woman's car and the jeeps engine bay is pretty dusty. Was going to give it a gently power wash (have a restrictor valve on the power washer to regulate the flow out of the nozzle). Is this adviseable :naughty: or is there anything to watch out for? I know for the glanza, I need to cover up/stay away from the dizzy and plug leads. I am just thinking of doing the bulkhead and strut towers etc. The two cars are galnza turbo and 2011 Landrover discovery.

Any advise is appreciated!

Rgds

don't go mad with the water cover the alternator and spray some tardis on first and give it 5 min then wash it off . it will come up like new

I just done the engine bay in the jeep last weekend, went mad with G101 then power washed the sh1t out of it :icon_headbang: after all their designed to be going through mucky fields and WET places

as for the car, cover over your cold air feed if you have one and don't use full power or use full power but just stay well back and mist over till clean, personally i've never covered the alternator but each to their own i suppose

i always try not too look when people washing modern engines with power washer... looks damn scary and expensive.

i will admit, i dont know if that is bad or good for the engine, but my fu*k i wont let anyone near my scooby with power washer.

Thanks for the reply lads. No don't intend going mad with the water alright. Will be using more elbow grease than water!! I'll turn it down a few notches and only rinse it off.

Probably best to let it dry for while before trying to start.

@nick, your right I am not too worried about the land rover as it is meant for off road use anyway.

Might do a before and after on it let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Paddy

plenty of garages power hose down engine bays to clean off a oil leak or spill

they all will leave the engine running so its hot and will try off any water where its not needed

I powerwashed it before after using those engine degreaser foam sprays. Didn't cover anything and didn't have any problems afterwards. I reckon engines would have to be semi-waterproof anyway considering how and where they have to work - i mean top and bottom and front have plenty of holes for rain!

I'de be wary of your alternator if washing it in future though. You can wash the grease out that surrounds the bearings and cause your alternator to fail prematurely.
