problem with diff or gearbox?

Middle Lane Hogs
HI guys,I have posted before about a whineing kinda like a bearing gone noise coming from my 01 legacy b4 turbo,I now have noticed a strong virbration in the steering but only the odd time and it only happens when i slow down to about 50klms and when i accelerate again keeping the car in 5th gear(my box is auto by the way!)im gettin a vibration for a few seconds, someone told me it could be my diff or possibly the gearbox.I got all the wheel bearings and all the obvious checked and found nothing wrong, I know about "active transmissions" in Rathcoole but i just wanted some opinions before i dropped it down as i live a good bit away from them.Any advice?

Hard to call. Could be either. On the bright side I have an Auto box and diff here for one if needed-very cheap

active only do manual boxes, had a 00 b4 in last week with the front diff giving similar issues.

yeah i know i was talkin to them last week and he told me that, but he told me to bring it down anyway he might be able to do something,if it was the diff and it could be repaired how much would it cost???

Probably cost 4 times more than a second hand box.. You will never get an accurate cost until they open the box and see what damage has been done. And will probably cost €2-300 just to open the box and examine it.. If the diff crapped out then the chunks could have done untold damage to any of the gear or other internals..

Problem with a second hand box is you don't know the history. I've replaced 3 boxes with diff issues, one was faulty when i bought the car, the second hand box that was put in sh!t itself nearly a year to the day later with the centre diff gone again. I replaced it with an early 6 speed box and the front diff in that took a sh!t a year later. Finally got a new 6 speed DCCD from an 07 sti with 7,000km's on it and we're coming up on our first anniversary now soon, touch wood now she'll beall good :wall: :wall: :wall:

sh*t man you had a lot of problems with boxes, are you racing them or what? is the centre diff inside the gearbox??the car is driving fine just the odd vibration and a annoying noise, ill just have to get it checked and thats that.Check out the 03 sti imprezza on donedeal it looks mint.dunno if this link will work??? outhttp://cars.donedeal.ie/donedeal/classifieds/viewFullPhoto.jsp?cid=5134192&ad=1852829

First one was nothing to do with me, it was replaced under warranty.. The centre diff gives a lot of trouble in the manual B4's.. Its the same box as a uk turbo which is lighter and a lot less power. The open front diff in the early bugeyes was non-dccd and give some trouble as well and just my luck it went when i put it into mine.. I certainly don't drive it easy but i certainly don't abuse them either

a bit of topic, what kind of price would you expect to pay for a good dccd box and is yours wired up to work and does the rear diff need to be changed to :ponder2:

If you've a bug wrx then you could go with a dccd box from a type r which will be a straight swap but you will need a rear diff with a matching drop gear. Would cost you around €500.

As for the 6 speed boxes, they go for big money, in the uk and up north for anywhere from £1600-£2000. Subaru Salvage do them for good money down here though.

I don't have the DCCD hooked up as i don't have an external controller. Don't think i will either as the car will be going up for sale within the next fortnight

sorry to contradict ya robbie but i taught to fit a dccd box whether its a 5 or 6 speed you need an r180 rear diff and shafts and hubs or am i wrong on that :ponder2:

Ya can get the R160's to match dec, well accrding to the different breakers I've spoken to, you can anyway. But imo if you're going 50% of the way and fitting a 6 speed (or even 5 speed dccd), then go the rest and fit the R180 as well. The handling of my leggy is transformed with the R180 rear diff

A uk 6speed matches 3.54 r160 diff of yours. 98% im right. But need double check. So would need box, prop, and if 6speed clutch going in, clutck fork and slave cylinder and starter.

once the ratio's match ie. 3.6 or 4.1 etc either r160 or r180 will work, but the 180 is the one you want
