And the only car in the country with winter wheels is parked in the garage without insurance now [emoji38]

Other wise Irish winters and mountains can't compare to Swiss. In mos mainland countries winter tires a re obligatory (and chains in the boot)

Wheels, because swapping the tires in CH costs about 100 and needs to be scheduled several weeks prior to it. So I bought wheels, a set of TPMS sensors and sensor programming device.

Winter shoes are a must have if you live near mountains... even here in Ireland I think.
Since 2006 been going across the WW mountains in plenty of snow... 4wd is no help if on summer tyres.
Have all season / winter (non studded) tyres on one car all year round.
Have set of "winter wheels" for the Hawk and Octavia to swap when it gets colder.
- changing tyres is more expensive alright then just having another set of 2nd hand rims... and I have the space to store them anyway.

I have quite an experience of snow/ice driving. If I knew how mild the winter in Switzerland is, I wouldn't bother changing boots.
4wd is even a disadvantage if you don't know how to drive it.
There is a saying in Russia:
- What should you do if you are skidded on a front-wheel drive?
- Press down the accelerator. Turn the wheel towards the skid.
- What should you do if you are skidded on a rear-wheel drive?
- Release the accelerator. Turn the wheel towards the skid.
- What should you do if you are skidded on a four-wheel drive?
- Fasten your belt and cross yourself. /pray.
