Im in the same boat Eric, gonna take about 2-3k a year off the take home pay. At least the job is safe for the time being.
Me da and sis were both laid off recently - it's not a position i'd like to be in..

been throwin out cv's everywhere the last week but nothin...
company i work for employed over 550 people 12 months ago and had seen there work load grow by 400% in the previous 4 years and now there is talk of possibly closing in 6 months as thats when the current jobs will be complete and no new work is comin in despite pricing everythin that moves at cost or below just to keep work in the yard
most of my mates are in similar situations, facing lay off's 3day weeks etc

Anyone know if its true that a politicians wage is tax free? And if so, why it is??

Unfortunately I'm in the only Job in the Public sector that cann't strike. Although all the other organisations will be striking.
This country is going to come to a stand still in the next couple of weeks and months.
If they lessoned the Levey % and put it right accross the board then it would be fair. Instead of a 10% on the likes of myself just put a 2 or 3 % accross everything. Remember this is on top of the already in place 1% they are already taking from me in another levey. So in total it'll be around 60 a week. Thats just nuts.
We pick up the peaces and supply the money for the banks and the private sector to pull them out of a hole. It will get far worse before it ever gets better.
They say Pension but my pension is non contrabutory as it's a state pension.
We gained nothing during the Celtic tiger, How are the private sector getting away scot free. No fecking Justice in this country.
Granted I have a secure Job but I didn't earn loads over the last few years to pay off morgages. I'm doing a very hard job at times for feck all and all they want to do is take tha from me and everyone else in the public sector.

Im still hanging in there work wise but i just dont think about it anymore, what ever happens happens an i will try deal with it then. What i am finding sickening is all the unbeleivable salarys that are cumming to light, i beleive there is a ceo of some bank that takes home a small 2.2 million per annum, these figures seem animated but these are what is being paid, i have heard tha some banks in uk were bailed out and the first thing the heads done was paid there own bonus out of money, permanent tsb seemingly bumped up there a/cs by either 6 million or 6 billion when they were being investigated and the money then dissapeared, just crazy stuff coming to light, and guys like eric and everyone else taking the hits for it, they fok up and we pay up, its disgraceful, all these big earning thiefs should be fokd out of there jobs and charged arond 90% tax, business cant survivein ireland cause of esb costs etc etc, were told that esb going up due to fuel costs, but yet there was a figure for one guy, not sure of position but it was over 400k per year, and thats only one guy in lower ranks, thats why our esb is expensive and thats why business are closing, people ask how can a bank run out of momney, well when there run like a mafia business with guys bring home 1 and 2 million salary, how can they survive, government should put a cap on max wage at 100k or less if bailing a bank out and if they want to work for that grand if nor fok off, and ring me on 08687...... 
the government had a raise planed of 40k or something.. thats RAISE of double a years wage for average worker!!!!! a raise of 40k???? its just unreal the figures that they come out wit, i often asked for a raise of 20 quid and was refused and these guys can approv 40k for them selves oh yea none of them being drove around in eco friendly -1ltr biofuel cars with solar panels attached like what we are supposed to be happy with being pushed into, big merc 4 and 5ltr petrols who pays the 2k road tax on those babys

think the goverment cars were tax free same as a cop car, but still 50grand+ for there cars.
