An AFR controller (PLX, Innovate, Zeitronix, etc.)
A knock detection system (the simplest being the "detcan")

This is a channen on YT MRT Performance down in Australia. He provides some good insights on the EJ20 engine.
In this video he offers guidance on determining if the GC8 can be mapped, in the video intro he mentions it and at timestamp 7m25s he hoes into the detail...
In this video from timestamp 6m30s he talks about air intake mods, the impact on the maf sensor calibrated airflow matrix and resulting cumulative effect over time causing big end bearing failure.....
