Ride On Lawnmowers - Any advice???

Hey all,

I've decided after another 3 hours of back breaking work cutting the grass in the new gaff this weekend... with a push mower :angry1:.... that I've had enough.

I've decided to try and pick up a cheap second-hand ride on mower. There's about 1/2 an acre of grass to be cut and a very slight 5 degree incline on the front lawn so I reckon a 10-12hp motor would be plenty strong. Has anyone any advice or throughts on ride-ons... hydrstatic mowers etc....???

Likewise does anyone have one they want rid of or know of anywhere that I could pick up a good one cheap? Ideally I'm after a rear discharge mower with a 30-32" plus cutting deck... and ideally not a mulching deck either as I here they can have a tendency to block up easier with damp grass.

Any help is greatly apprecaited,

Cheers,

Jamie.

I got one from ACE hire , Viking 17.5 hp hydrostatic drive. Its great no problems. I thought if its good enough for hire out it should be pretty tough. Rear discharge and can collect or mulch. You need the power to mulch.

honda ride on mowers are great mowers but there not cheap by any means . i've a husqvarna 151 and its never missed a beat. make sure you know what your buying if going the donedeal road like everything theres loads of shite for sale .

Hoping to look at a husqvarna Joe... Spoke to a repair guy today who advices strongly against MTD and a few other brands as they tend to give trouble and be pricey to repair. I was told to steer clear of Murray too as they've gone bust. Rally, Honda or Husqvarna are all good from what he said.

12 hp be on the week side, unless ur able to cut very often, we have 16 hp castlegarden one, 6 years old, never needed anything

if you can get a good rally one they'll go for ever . but there's not that many for sale . but there a great mower

Apparently the older ones are made under licence by husqvarna... Or vice versa... Cant remember which. So generally as good as each other Joe. Missed a Rally by a day!! Grrrrrr!

if i hadnt of waited for ya you still be lost up there :shhh:

i still think the best solution is to put a mower or 2 even on the front of the wagon, sure thats all the wagons would be good for,
it might even handle better  :icon_razz:

Have a castlegarden one, right mower and we have a steep enough garden, steep enough that if you cut it across you have to lean to one side (just incase)!!

Be sure to get a mower where the collection shoot goes under the seat into the grass box and not the one that has it coming out the side and travels up and into the box!!! break your heart clogging up if the grass is anyway damp.

I was told the opposite today Nic that the rear discharge mowers can block worse if they don't have a large bore. Apparently the side ones are better if you're not collecting... Which I won't be... As the grass has less distance to travel with the collector pipes removed when being spat out.

I gather the csstlegarden mowers are great yokes.. But unfortunately out of my budget.
