does anyone know how the scangauge 2 shows timing advance or retard?

it shows the ignition timing by advance or retard, I have one on my car, have a thread on it on scooby net

Thanks for the link, i fitted one today and it reads between 10 and 40 but is this advance or retard? what should it read? can this measurement be used to know if the fuel is ok or not?
