Smell of burning oil from under bonnet

GregWRX

Sunday Drivers
01 WRX sitting idle for the last 4 days, took her to work this morning and there was a strong smell of burning oil when i pulled in to garage for petrol, popped the bonnet and smoke was coming from around turbo, noticed oil staining around pipe coming from intercooler into turbo, no oil in driveway so its not a big leak just a drip.

Parked it up for the day to have a look at later tonight but hoping its just a loose jubliee clip or perished or cracked pipe.

Anyone else have any idea wat it may be or what i should be looking out for???

Car has 68,000 miles on it and is not abused.

Cheers

When I first bought my WRX I had smoke billowing from the wheel arches when sat in traffic, I thought I'd bought a dud, and like yours, smoke appeared to be coming from the turbo. However, it was a slight leak from the rocker gasket and oil was burning on the manifold. From what I read at the time, it seems to be a common enough problem with Subarus.

Paulo,

How was that sorted? and how much or was she under warranty or is it a diy job?

Cheers

I got a new gasket from Ryans and my mechanic mate sorted it pretty quickly for a few quid. I doubt it is a DIY job unless you're pretty handy, but it's not a major job to do.

Hey Greg ,
that is more than likley one of the hoses coming
to or from the turbo.

Basically you need to get in there have a good look and replace the hoses
in question , if there is no crack/tare etc... it more than likely has worn
where it clips onto the turbo.

Niall.

as above, but more then likely it's the rocker cover gasket as these leak a lot on the turbo side they cost about €9....... all you need then is to fit it or get somone to do it.

I noticed an oil stain under cylinder No3. when changing plugs over the weekend. Could this be the rocker cover gasket?

hey lads
yeah iv had to do both rockers
ul need 10&12mm ring ratchet spanners
its a bitch but straight forward enough
cover manifold
all the best things in drip

Ive a very similar situation with my 98 Sti and hopefully you've all just answered my questions too.
Cheers
