Snapped wheel nut removal

Went to get the wheels balanced today and they snapped one of the nuts. I want it removed without damaging the alloy.

Anyone have any recommendations? I'm in Clonee but can travel to get it sorted.

if "they" broke it , surely "they" should fix it , or cover the cost .

steel or alu nuts

last time wheel was off car ???

Quite light so guessing alu. Not sure when last off but Brian said he'd swapped them as the other ones were starting to rust and looked crap lol

They're going to do the balancing for free if I can get somewhere to get it off. He said he can do it but didn't want to risk damaging the alloys.

Yeh he snapped it with the gun. I wouldn't mind, he loosened the others with the breaker bar first!

Steel nuts & bought from scoobyparts...only ever tightened by wheel brace so he was clearly a ham fisted gobshite to break them :icon_rolleyes:

If it happend when he was removing the nuts, I wouldn't consider it his fault... It could be a fault in the wheel nut at it looks to have broke at the start of the taper...
Or perhaps the nut was damage/cracked/ over tightend by the last person who tightend them...

In fairness you can't really open a nut wrong.

id bring it back and make him take it off John , if he damages the wheel in the process he pays for fixing that ,

very nice of him to offer the balancing for free , imo a cute hole way of getting rid of his fu*k up and hoping you wont come back ,

Looking at the pic, and the fact I have never ever seen a nut break like that.. I'd would think it was either a fault in nut, possible a crack, and it's where the cone starts.

It's possible the nut was drove in on wrong threads last time, but the threads look ok on the stud but the ones inside nut could be a mess.. They could have been over tighted before etc etc or just that nut had a weakness either from mis use or flaw..

But it would of broke regardless of gun or bar IMO, I don't really think there is a wrong way to take off a nut tbh...
I would be having a good look at the rest of the nuts aswell... That's not a hood sign... Never ever seen that happen

Sorry... To try get it off is gonna be a pain in the GOOCH... You could try heat but you might damage alloy..

I would personally try to mark the nut say at 12 3 6 and 9 o'clock with a centre punch, and drill with a 3.5mm bit.. Trying to avoid the threads on stud.. Then possible breaking it off in quadrants... And be open minded that if you damage the stud.. A replacemet can be fitted...

Hope thats of some help

@bonito, I am in the same boat! Snapped a poxy aluminium nut while replacing them with steel ones! Happened a few weeks ago but havent got it sorted yet, havent driven the car that much since but I reckon drilling like KenC said is the best option,a good drill and decent bits, wouldnt use heat.

Alan 555scooby fixed mine before bye welding a nut on to it
not sure if it was as bad as this one
im also in the similar boat now again as one off my aluminium lock nuts is wearing as the socket cracked and slid around it
so i need to get one off those special sockets someone was talking about before and try that
was at the car trying and just walked away haven't looked at it since :banghead

Think a Steel wheel nut group buy could be on the cards... I need a set myself.
Was thinking of the internal drive lug nut ones to stop scratching alloy with socket.

Good idea , id be in the market for a set

Tommy your good at organising the group buys! Have you just nominated yourself again??!! (I just got a set before christmas so I dont need a set)

I'd be in on a group buy.

Went to another tyre centre and he had a look and said in his opinion the nut sheered from tightening and not loosening. As I said, he loosened every other single nut with the breaker bar and hit that one with the gun straight off.

Like Kens idea he said loosen the other four nuts on the wheel and drill as many weak points in to the cracked nut and roll the car back and forward until the nut breaks off.

Can studs be replaced separately in the hub?
