Petrolheads
What a weekend ,
My B4 was smoking like mad there the last few weeks , and going through a hell of a lot of oil. So i was thinking maybe valve stem oil seals, or piston rings maybe .I decided to give Dave in STiTuning a bell and booked her in for some diagnostics. All was well when i set off for navan on friday ,but had to stop for some directions to his garage , so i pulled in to a petrol station ,parked up and went to ask someone.
I was just after getting the directions i needed when i heard a loud thud ..."oh no " i thought ,it cant be , and i slowly turned around my worst fears were confirmed . Some complete and utter dozy bint had reversed her LWB pajero into the front of my baby ...i fell to my knees like the guy on the cover of platoon , and shouted for a bit . Then i went to survey the damage .
The bonnet had folded like an accordian , the front grill was in pieces ,and the HID headlight was shagged , but thankfully the front bumper was intact . If that had been damaged i would have been done for murder . But i got away lightly considering ,it was all only cosmetic damage.
So after consoling the woman who was clearly in shock , i got her insurance details and left her with the reassurance that nobody was killed (luckily for her) and went on my merry way .
So i left the car with dave and headed to town with the intention of having a few pints to calm my own nerves . Then he called with the bad news , compression test had come back conclusive , 155psi in all cylinders except one , which was reading 50psi ...
a quick look through a fibre optic camera had proved i had a melted piston .
Dave told me i could just replace the piston and hope it doesnt melt again .
So to be on the safe side , while the engine was gonna be out ,i decided to go for a full engine rebuild with ACL race bearings , and a remap for 95ron by bob rawle ..to prevent any further issues , seeing as the octane booster wasnt providing me with any protection at all .
needless to say there was more than a few pints consumed that night ,to try and forget the lovely bill i have coming my way in a couple of weeks.
have to add fairplay to davelegacy though for taking me through the various options i have , and for explaining in great detailexactly what happened ... spend 5 minutes with him and you just know , that he knows his sh*t
