ive developed a loud squeling noise from my alternator , when ever i press accelerator i get a high pitched squeal , the higher i revc the louder it gets, it sound slike a car reversing but much harsher sounding, ive been told it could be the alternator bearing, my question is if i replace the alternator does that replace teh bearing or is the bearing a seperate part to go with the alternator if u can understand what i mean

Bearing is in the alternator, shaft rotates in it so if you replace the alternator you replace the bearing if you know what i mean.......providing theres a good bearing the replacement alternator of course.............

I'd have the belt tightened or replaced first to see if that fixes it.

Take the belt off the alternator/ power steering pump and spin the pullies by hand and listen for any grinding or rough sounds. Also check for any play in the shaft up and down and in and out...........i assume the belt is not just slipping by the way ??? That will give a squeal aswell but usually clears after a few rev ups............ :ponder:

no its deffo not a squeling belt anyway , its sounds more mechaniocal then that, ive had a squeling belt before on other cars and it sounds different, i guess ill just bring it to the mechanic

If you're sure it's no belt and it's rather alternator - you can try to put the screwdriver to alternator shell and to the other end - handle the best to take care of your eyes, ears, whatever :) - put your head, the bone near the ear - the sound should go well through it straight to your ear - even if it looks strange - and you might be able to locate the noise source?

Or maybe you have a stetoscope by any chance? there are also some special versions for car mechanics, you put earphones into ears, and the other end you stick to the alternator in this case.

Which version of car do you have? 2 or 3 pin alternator? If you live close to Tallaght and you're sure your alternator is making the noise I have a spare one 2 pins.

Anyway - if you find it's bearings making noise - you can replace them.
