STI - importing from Japan

Is in it made how these engines get a bad name then?

Every other forum in the country would call them chocolate engines.

Jp couldn't get 400 from his motor no matter what he did, he should have bought a new age!!

The engine is only one part of the puzzle.. Everything else has to work well aswell, I've learned that the hard way... Some times things just don't work well together... And you can be left scratching your head... And have to start from the start again

The classic 2 litres ones brought in from japan alot of the engines poped. Was that a fuel issue mostly

[/quote]. Couple of factors. Early ECU's can't retard timing when there's knock. Majority of ppl were running 95 Ron and wouldn't know they were getting knock as very few had knock links fitted. Lads messing about with RSM's and manual boost control and thinking it's grand to floor it all the time.

some were fuel issues eating pistons etc some were oil starvation issues destroying bearings . and as john said ecu not being good enough to compensate for poor fuel ,I don't really agree with the flooring it statement though I think if an engine can rev to 6-8k rpm you should be able to rev it to that and not worry about it after all Subaru designed the rev limit for them so why cant you use it ?unless its not mapped right or poorly maintained then that could be a big issue.I think a lot of the block issues with the newer ones is simply down to financial numbers with Subaru trying to cut costs and not putting the materials into making the blocks. poor quality !!

Of course you can and should be able to floor it. I meant along with the other factors if you were flooring it all the time, it was knocking all the time and only a matter of when before it went pop as opposed to someone granny driving all the time on 95 with original ECU.

Bad form on Subarus part in newer engines for sure but what can we do.

Hey,

looking for an advice. Would like to get WRX-STI 2.5l 08. And thinking about importing it from Japan (using jdm auction). The reason for importing it is that it seems like none of these are available here.

Any advice? Anything i should worry about or any other way to get it?

Also is there anyone here who used jdm auction before? Would like to get more details on the quality of their service, etc...

So maybe we now should go back to the original post now, lol

First off hello again and I hope we didn't scare you off the club or Subaru!!!

To answer some of your questions we may need more info from you, I.E. do you like to touch the rev limited on ocassion, if so you need a jdm hawk Sti as you want an 07 onwards car. Jdm hawks come in 06/07 and are 2.0l cars.
If you have a light right foot and love the kick of a load of torque up your back side before 5k revs and like the look of the. Impreza hatch 08 Sti 2.5l (1080€ to. Tax)well that's the car for you.

If I were you I would buy a private sale car so you don't have to pay delldoy prices, uk is your best bet

Yup this post went a bit wild, but I am finding all the discussion here useful. Don't feel scared yet ;)

I did not own a Subaru or a performance car yet, so it is hard to say how will I drive it. Tommy 555 here offered to meet up with me and show me his beauty, to give me an idea about the UK type 2.5l.

After seeing all this I am considering either going forward with the 2.5l UK type silver forged hawk from hurst (or well at least going to the UK and see it). It is 2.5l but it is also forged so it seems that this decreases the chance of the engine problems a bit. And even though I can't say what kind of Subaru driver I will be - I loved all the cars I had so far and would never push them to the rev limit. But then again Subaru might change me.

Or I would be looking for a 2.0 UK type if the above would not suit... I will know more tomorrow when I get more details about the silver hawk.

In general I came here hoping that maybe I will get some advice, but I got much more than that. Thanks a lot!

Even if you test drive a few over here to get a feel of things, there's no harm in buying in the UK or even Japan once you've settled on what you want.

ok so now that we are back on topic :multijump:as above drive a few and see what way you like them personally then decide .if you get a uk sti that has been forged it will be a great car. if you buy a jdm sti it will also be a great car what I did with mine with regard to how I drive it was I got it mapped for 95 octane and the put it on a dyno to see the power but also to see the way it delivers the power , now mine is only a wrx but its fitted with sti clocks so it has the shift light beeper on the rev counter so after the dyno run when I seen that it was 262 bhp and that it starts to tail off power at 5600 rpm I set my shift light beeper to 5500 rpm so even if im driving it like I stole it and not concentrating on the revs of the engine it beeps when I get to 5500 rpm so its near impossible to over rev it .its a standard feature in new age sti,s and one that is very usefull to keeping things in check

What you are saying makes sense ... I don't really see why would I push it over to revs where the power tails off. But then again I have to account for the fact that I did not own one yet, thus I have no idea what I am talking about ...

I know it's only jan 12th but I'm sure lads could organise a few different models to attend cars and coffee in cherrywood on first Sunday of February where you could have a good luck over them. Just an idea if you are not in a rush to buy.

That is a great idea indeed. I am coming back from my vacation exactly on that Sunday, at what time does this usually happen? I am sure that I will not purchase anything before then. My original plan was to fly to the UK on or around 3-Feb to check few of them and maybe buy one.

How? Is it the mapper or can it be done by some mad sequence?
