STi wing removal (1st time in 8 years, could be the 1st in 19 years)

Skipper555

Sunday Drivers
Spotted a minor rust spot yesterday and decided to remove the wing for the first time in 8 years...it may be the first time ever. As expected, plenty of dirt and rust underneath. Decided to take immediate action (since we had dry weather) by cleaning it up, sanding it and applying primer to protect and prevent further damage until the matching paint arrives. Will finalize this process asap.

Lesson learned: Remove the wing to clean it up more often! Suggest other STi owners do the same to avoid this scenario.

Unfortunately a common area for this to occur but it’s a lot of water and dirt getting caught for donkeys years that doesn’t help.

It’s easy enough to treat once it’s a small bit. Everyone should take theirs off as these cars aren’t getting any younger.

Good work. What primer did you use? Unless it was epoxy or etch primer, get a rust inhibitor on to it, because normal primer is hydroscopic and will absorb moisture into the area you've primed.

Def agree.
Aerosol is fine as spot primer or temporary seal.
I'd wipe that off with thinners and 2k epoxy the affected areas.
Careful its kept localised to the spoiler area or you'll end up blending into the quarters....making a bigger job of it 🫤
Fkng rust 🙈
