Well all,
looking for advice/opinions for my 2001 b4!
Not sure what my best option is! Was driving it this week and noticed temp gauge go straight to red!! Pulled in as only two miles from home!when went to restart it loud bang n engine wouldnt turn over!To make long story short problem was head gasket n water leaking into a cracked cylinder(that's what mechanic has diagnosed!) Now I'm wondering whether to fix it,break it or what to do! The engine has 180000kms,of course just 3months tax!, and tested till aug! and never gave any real trouble! I reckon I'd realistically get 2k in todays market for car before this trouble so hard to justify spending heap fixing it! Engine been taken out this weekend and will see what needs doing but not too optimistic! What are yere views on either fixing it,replacing engine totally or breaking and cutting my losses?
Any comments greatly appreciated!!!

it all comes down to you the owner.

all the questions you ask imo only you can answer.

how much do you like the car.

where you planning on changing before this etc.

Well I've had car over 2years which is a huge compliment to the car as usually after 6months I'd be tired of them and any long spins I get always love the drive!
I wouldn't justify spending half the value of car fixing it but would rather sell car as whole then spending 6months selling parts!

A replacement block can be got for €700 so like Dave said, it really depends on your attachment to the car

You mightnt find too many people willing to buy a car with blown engine in the current climate, that would be my only concern, specially with bargains out there

Ya very true! I guess attachment and personal feeling towards car aside if ye were in my shoes what'd ye recommend!?im surely looking at bill around 800-1000 before car driving again?

Unless you can do it yourself a proper oe rebuild runs at about €2300 these days i think. I would never recommend a s/h block or engine-its a pig in a bag-i.e.you dont know what youre getting

Couple of ways of looking at it...if money wasnt really too much of a concern id opt for a full forged rebuild but you'd be looking €3.5k plus id imagine...the replacement block is a much cheaper option at around €1k fitted. If you were happy to drive the car standard and virtually ummodified thats the option id be going for

problem is weather a cars value is e2000 or e20000 the parts, machine shop and labour costs remain the same.

If u break it, what will u buy? Another one? If that's the case, jap performance in Wicklow will do the block for €690 and fit for €500. At least u know what you have then.... U buy another car and the engine could go driving it home! I should know! I made 100's of phone calls and eventually tracked down a complete engine, with turbos, clutch the lot. It was imported direct from Japan and had only 40k Kms on it. That cost 1,200 euro fitted!

Haven't thought as far as a replacement yet!maybe just a cheap runaround!thanks for all comments, can't justify spending that on an engine at minute!!

Then I think u should break it. No matter what route you take your looking 1,000 + ... If your breaking ill take the wind deflectors!

And.... Must think bout it!
