Subaru Diesel

planb

Sunday Drivers
I went away from Subaru about a year ago, just to try something different (OPC Astra).
I always wanted to get back into Subaru...I'm looking at a Boxer Diesel, because I put up alot of mileage on the OPC...

Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on the Boxer Diesel? Or if some one has one ? Also information on where does tuning for this car?
Any info basically!

Great to be back on the site! :subaru:

thats about the only fault (and its not a problem) I can give about the legacy diesel...its a 5 speed. Even after 6 months of ownership, i still find myself trying for 6th on the motorway. Surprisingly enough though 5th gear is very long.

I've just clocked up 11000km on mine and the more it gets on it the better it is.

The new shape Legacy has the 6speed

They are not like you're average diesel...apart from when it starts up and you hear that tell tale bag of spanners, after a minute, its as quiet as a mouse.

I took one for a test drive and was impressed but it lacked that lovely burble sound, does anyone know wether or not with the correct set up can you get this from a boxer diesel?????????????????????????? :subaru:

Drove a Leggy Estate the other day with the Diesel engine.......

Ill be honest...... Its the most outstanding Diesel engine i have ever driven, Its very responsive and seems to give good mpg...

I would consider 1 as my next car i think

i have a diesel, 2009 legacy and i have done 33k since new. It is superb. I have never had less than 50mpg and normally get around 53mpg. All my miles are long distance though and not in cities. The power is excellent and there is very little turbo lag. The gearing is fine but it took a couple of weeks to get used to it. I had the 2.0 petrol before this and it is 10 times better than it. Overall i would definitely recommend it. Its also very very smooth and quiet once it is warm. They are ratly when cold but i suppose most diesels are. Very few companies do the remap, and the ones you can find want 600 euro, this will bring it up from 150bhp to 190bhp. You can get the chip box at around 250 euro but this brings insurance and warrantly problems.

What about Insurance and Tax price for Diesel Subaru? Is it cheaper than 2.0 Litre petrol one? Or it is all only for the capacity of the engine and not about emission and kind of gasoline?
I heard something about less taxes for cars which is produced some time after July 2008 or smth like that and it is calculated in accordance to pollution it makes? Is it true? Where could I read about it?

Good as the Subaru Boxer engine is, it is a totally different ownership proposition to any of Subaru's turbo'd 2.0 petrol motors. The diesel Legacy and Impreza are economical load luggers/family transport and wont give you the thrill of the wrx or sti models. As such, it is in direct competition with a number of cars which are actually far better. The Legacy suffers from turbo lag and overly long gearing making it tricky to drive in town and handicaps its overtaking capability. On the plus side the long gearing helps mpg but there are others that achieve better mpg without resorting to super long gearing. The awd system as we all know is excellent but does nothing for fuel economy and if mpg is top of your list then a fwd car would make more sense. It all boils down to personal taste in the end as most car purchases are an emotional buy, if not why would Fiat/Alfa have lasted so long!

insurance is about the same. Tax is lower than the petrol 2.0. I think it was €302 for the diesel and i was paying €600+ for the petrol. You need to make sure you get a diesel registered after July 08 to get the cheaper tax. I disagree with frawls about being hard to drive around town, the gearing is long but after a couple of weeks it really doesnt effect you, and as for overtaking it is far far better than the 2.0 petrol (non turbo). There may be better diesels out there but not for 28k that you can pick up a brand new (old shape) one for. Name a car for 28k (i got mine for 26k after serious haggling) that gives you 4 wheel drive which is far safer than 2, electric front & rear windows, 17 inch alloys, electric fold away mirrors, MP3 compatibility, heated seats, electric seats, heated windscreen wipers, HID headlamps, headlamp washers, 6 stack CD, individual climate control, the list goes on and all for 28k. The equivalent BMW, audi, would be 40k plus and would be no where near on reliabilty and no where near as good to drive. I do 60000kms per year and ive had 4 BMW's and they really are not like they used to be on reliability. I've had 2 legacy's and i have never had a single problem with them, the last one had 170,000 on it on a 2005!

I've just come from a Alfa Diesel which is renowned for being one of the best out there but I find the Subaru much better.

STi Tuning, do OCT Tuning, so they could remap your diesel Impreza
