Subaru Diesel

"......All my miles are long distance though and not in cities"
"... I disagree with frawls about being hard to drive around town, the gearing is long but after a couple of weeks it really doesnt effect you,."
"..... Name a car for 28k (i got mine for 26k after serious haggling) that gives you 4 wheel drive which is far safer than 2, electric front & rear windows, 17 inch alloys, electric fold away mirrors, MP3 compatibility, heated seats, electric seats, heated windscreen wipers, HID headlamps, headlamp washers, 6 stack CD, individual climate control, the list goes on and all for 28k".

Anyone who has done a lot of town and city driving complains about the overly long gearing and having to concentrate so as not to keep the engine falling out of the power band.

The new Legacy 150 bhp 2.0 tdi is 35k but for 2k less you can have this Superb with more powerful 170 bhp tdi awd with leather seats!

Before you say give me the Legacy any day remember the new model is getting fairly tepid reviews whereas the new Superb is getting glowing reviews from every motoring journo who has tried it. Actually euro for euro there is probably nothing to touch it within 10 to 15 k of its price. Of course the problem is can you live with the badge and plain jane looks? It's a matter of personal taste of course but the competition in this market segment is fierce and there are far more choices available than in the WRX/EVO/RS class.

i agree the superb is a great car but call me a badge snob because i just couldnt have a skoda. It also looks bland.
Also they are not really a true drivers car and the legacy is. I agree that the new legacy is overpriced and i would also question the styling but the old shape at 28k is still a bargain.

is it a saloon or estate you got? I picked up an estate for 27.5k about 6 months ago and I thought I did well to get that

The new Legacy comes with new 6speed gearbox and the two AWD systems are not comperable.
I believe those journalists have a different measurment for the skoda and the subaru. Altought the suberb is a good car but can't even come close to the legacy.
In the market segments of diesel AWD cars the legacy (and new outback) are the best value and a size down there is no competitor for diesel impreza.

i got one of the limited edition saloons, dark grey with dark grey wheels, very happy with it, couldnt find a better car for the money, you got a great deal for the estate

[/quote]mine is also one of the ltd edition estates, dark grey also with the grey wheels and honeycomb grill. I was lucky enough that it also came with the full spec inside except for the leather seats. The aux input socket is handy and love the heated seats

Actually, the new Superb is supposed to handle as well as a Mondeo, the class leader in this segment for handling and ride quality. It will outsell the new Legacy because it is much better value for money and the interior quality is like from a car in a class above. The 4wd system is obviously a Haldex system but that's all the better for mpg and it would never be troubled by our Irish climate anyway sp it all boils down to personal preference again. Both are great cars and I dont think anyone who buys either of them would have anything other than praise for them and righty so. I would love to see what a remapped Legacy Tdi is like. Has anyone here got one?

I believe the remap is outstanding but ive been having problems finding out who will do it. I had one quote of €650 but i think thats too steep. The remap is meant to address a lot of the gearing issues. I think i'll start a new thread asking about a remap!!
