Subaru Legacy Estate

Hi Folks,
I'm currently looking to change car and always fancied one of these most likely a 2.0 litre standard model 2004-2007ish depending on price so have a few questions.
What's the real world mpg of the 2 litre. Realised it changed in 05/06 to a more powerful unit so comments on either is welcome
Is there an mpg difference between Auto and manual. On paper they are supposed to be the same but I'm a bit suspicious.
I've seen a few clean looking 4 or 5 yr old examples on the web with about 100k up on them. Are they a good option or are there likely to be a few bills soon at this mileage.

Any help/advice is welcome

Hi Dossie. I wasn't planning on one of the higher power models as I do a bit of mileage as well. Not as much as you obviously cos 250 extra a month is ouch. I need to get something that can be kept north of 30 mpg with a little care. Wife is looking for estate....holidays ..3 kids..towing boats horsebox etc..... So all-in all something far less exciting that your fine machine..
 
if you will be using it as a tow car why not consider a diesel forester ? or maybe a legacy outback at a push ? 30 mpg is the stuff of dreams in scooby circles
 
I calculate mine at approx 28.25 mpg, I don't have a heavy foot but I'm not slow either!!

Ahh well Mike if ya can twist her arm mines a bargain !
 
to be honest mileage wise your looking at 550klm p er tank max with a very light foot that's what herself is getting with short trips and driving very easy. anti roll bar bushings seem to be the only minor item that wear after a while. i know where there's a nice well looked after 08 silver estate one :icon_grin: if your interested

Except some of the diesel models. if you could get an 2008 one which is when i think they diesel range came in, that would be your best bet for mpg.

Thats the same one I found on carzone. There are a few more but the high in price.
 
And that one is nearly €20k. I'm sure it could be bought for less but the way I look at it is, are you fooling yourself paying (say) €10k more for a diesel in order to get more mpg? Granted, you'd be getting a newer car but €10k will buy a lot of petrol for you. And if you did pay €20k, you'd be guaranteed to lose €4-5k in the first year in depreciation, whereas if you paid ~€10k for a car, no matter what happens you're not going to lose too much money on it. Just my opinion.

forester with its aerodynamics of a horsebox with ej204 (2.0 NA 160PS) will do 30mpg combined (city+motorway) with normal driving. would legacy be different? it might be a tad heavier but it is slicker after all...
 
That black estate has been up for a while. Offered to buy their spare wheels a while back but never got back to me. If i was op i'd look for a forester aswell

'Classic shape' forester is a great car but the rear is not that big/spacious...

im sure a 2008 petrol is similar money so you cant really compare to an older cheaper legacy

he doesnt want to spend 20k and from all the tests done on the diesel leggy, they never came near there 50mpg they were suppoused to get, most came out with around 33-35 mpg so theres no way a petrol version will get 30mpg, if your looking fuel economy dont buy a flat four as they dont do it.
 
45mpg is a fairly realistic figure for the diesel from what I hear....and improve once run in.

Have been in a petrol legacy 2.0 n/a (2005 model) that was reading 30 on the mpg average.
 
Well this thread's been busy since i last logged in. Diesel does looks nice but i don't fully trust most modern diesels their extra purchase cost plus a possible DMF type replacement pretty much cancel any advantage especially in the old tax regime pre July 08 cars.
