Subaru Legacy Knocking Noise

Hi guys and gals im new to this forum so be gentle hehe.

Im a first time subaru owner who finally bit the bullet and got myself one after years of wanting.
I have bought myself a lovely subaru legacy b4 rsk and have had it for only 2 days and then the drama happened !

A few hours ago while driving i noticed a slight knocking noise coming from the engine and when i was approaching a roundabout
i clutched in to neutral and the revs went low and it cut out.
i left the engine for a few mins and went to start it back up it just kept ticking over as in trying to start.
So as being on roundabout i got a push towards a car park and the car jumped in 2nd and started, drove slowly to a spot and turned it off.
Best way i could describe the noise would be it sounding like a diesel engine car (knocking/tapping noise)
When the car is idling in neutral its loud enough.
I drove the car home (the 3 miles from home) very slowly through the gears not going above 3000 rpm
It seemed the noise was coming and going.
Its parked up now and wont be moving until i have it looked at.

Could any of you guys be able to shed some light to help a first time subaru guy out ?
I have looked through the forum and seen the car was previously owned by Eliroache and Jasper it really is a beautiful car.

Any Help would be much appreciated guys

It doesn't sound good pal I hate to say.

What part of the country you in?

We're you giving it some when it happened?

:icon_sad: doesnt sound good paul welcome . sounds like your big end bearings but hopefully not

Hi Duffman

Im living in blanchardstown, thats the unusual thing i was only traveling 90-95 kms when the sound came.

it seemed to come and go at first until i got to the roundabout when it all happened.

I rang the guy i bought it of (marty) he said he has had no problems with it when he had it.

Really baffled here

There's no real way of knowing when it might happen unfortunately

And it has happened to so many lads on here just after they have bought there first scooby.

Hopefully it not the big ends gone as the car might not be worth fixing, from a cost point of view.

Dave in Sti tuning is only around the corner from you, he might take a look at it and advise you.

Sounds like a disaster :nono:

Just my luck after buying it.

The guy i bought it from gave me the number for a guy called dave (could be the same dude) ?

Is it overly expensive to buy a reconditioned engine ?

Sorry to hear that, serious case of bad timing, I was first owner of that car in ireland, sold it 3 years ago, was still going strong last iheard, as above give dave in RSR automotive [was stituning] a shout to look at it, he serviced it years ago when I owned it and knows subarus inside out.

Thanks for the input guys will give Dave a ring tomorrow and have my fingers crossed and try not to cry. :icon_sad: :icon_cry:

I feel your pain Paul. Had my B4 two hours and she went! I bought an engine, €1,200 fitted. Don't know the cost of a rebuild but it takes a long time, that's why I bought an engine. Straight swap, one out, one in.... But, with a rebuild you know what your getting! A second hand engine is risky! I got an imported engine from Japan, never ran in Ireland. Had about 50k kms on it. Drove the car for months after and it was running great. Sold it last November. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Ye I spotted it in the garden I'm always in that estate my girlfriend lives there I'm driving the blue impreza you've probably seen it
