Subaru's FT86 test mule spotted

Won't have that stupid high back on it I think that's throwing out the whole shape...which is probably the idea..personally can't wait for this car..I think the JDM imports with the 2.0 litre twin scroll will be the one to go for

it like a viper from the first shot an impreza from the second and a mustang from the third.
what is the world coming to at all

I can't feckin wait for this!
She's going to be gorgeous, Although, I Imagen I'll be drawn towards the RWD Toyobaru but with the scoobies turbo motor!
But the DCCD will probably be savage on them!
Can't wait
Dan

Dan I'm afraid that exactly what you'll be doing..waiting. This month's EVO magazine reported that Subaru & Toyota have shelved the project until at least 2013 in order to meet the current recession induced global demand for small clean economical shopping trollies. BY 2013 this car will no longer look like the stunner it does now as familiarity will dull the lines and there will be plenty more new metal around then from other manufacturers then, most of them with clean, powerful direct injection engines which Subaru seem to have an allergy to. Why they dont just build a DI 2.0 flat four is beyond me. Its as if they actually want to be consigned to the history books. I thought that one day I would be back in a Scooby but with every passing month I see no evidence of any possibility of this happening as the company is just so out of touch with what the market wants :wall:

If Toyota does go ahead... I heard it won't be the bargain coupe that was originally intended. Toyota are struggling to get subaru block down to correct emissions level and it has pushed the estimated price up substantially trying to achieve their eco friendly standards. :icon_rolleyes:

They better sort out the emissions cos doubt i'll ever buy a car that is 2k to tax tbh not the money just the principle....

Jamie, getting the emissions down is no longer the black art it used to be. A di engine running high compression and a small turbo has massively reduced emissions. Just look at almost every engine in the VAG fleet using 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 & 2.0 di turbos. Lots of power, loads of diesel like low down torque, no turbo lag and low emissions. Its a no brainer but for some reason Subaru just haven't copped on to it. I think they spent all of their tiny budget making the boxer diesel and had nothing left for a new low emissions EJ20. The worry I have is that Toyota might just call time on the boxer engine altogether. Another problem is that as good as the awd system is in the Subaru, because it is a full time system it eats fuel when there is no need for awd. Subaru should develop an efficient transmission like the latest gen 4 Haldex system which s demand driven and saves fuel through less power loss when not running in awd mode (which lets face it is most if the time). Throw in a switchable "stop start" system and you have super low emissions with no loss of power or fun. None of this is new technology anymore so why cant Subaru just get on with it and make it happen

I disagree about no loss of fun with the Haldex system and the fact that its more advanced than the Subaru system(for pure driving experience) but your completely correct in what you are saying as a whole, Subaru are dying on their ar$e..even the cosworth edition has been a let down..at 50k its just ridiculously overpriced..the new B4 is putting out the same power and torque it did 12 years ago and still does horrible mileage, they've stood still while all around them have been frantically updating, real shame.

Dagnut the latest gen 4 haldex controller allows total control over the system making it permanent or reactive and allows you to shift the bias forward or aft as you like just like the dccd except more so! The point I was making is that full time awd is inefficient as its like bringing an open umbrella with you every day in case it rains. The latest gen haldex is a really great system efficient and quick. If Subaru are serious about staying in business they will have to address their terrible emissions record head on and if that means a choice of, amongst other efficiency measures, a new form of reactive 4wd or going bust well there isn't much decision to be made then.

A good example of what is achievable is the new TT RS, gen 4 haldex, 2.0 di high compression engine and 69% aluminium construction, sub 225 g co2, 325 bhp and true 30 mpg. That engine in the STI would make me and I'm sure a lot of others buy another Impreza.

I wouldn't mind so much if the power outputs of the Legacy were static if it was losing weight and more efficient but its actually heavier and bigger in every dimension than the last gen car while no where near as good looking. The S402 imho is one of the best looking properly usable saloons on the road but even it is a dinosaur engine wise. Toyota may save Subaru but in saving it they may actually be killing everything the brand used to stand for. I say "used to stand for" as what it stands for now is mediocrity. Sad as it may seem, the reality is that long gone are the days when it used to stand for something truly special and different.

The TTRS is a 5 cylinder 2.5 but yeah i get your point, haven't driven one the gen 4 haldex I didn't know you could shift bias to the rear i thought the only Audi's with the Torsen system had rear bias.

That car in pictures is someone having a mess, that was 4dr, chopped into 2dr, the front wings have been batterd to fit the headlights, headlights look like a b4, and the whole back end is taped on, think someone is having a laugh

I'm sure that's the point of those pics, to throw everyone off!
As far as I had read the AWD in the TT RS is front biased, as opposed to the Read biased S5! it's about the packaging!
Technology wise, subaru seem to be dropping the ball a bit,
I don't understand why they can't figure out the direct injection on the boxer,
And High compression and smaller turbo makes perfect sence, What's the hold up??
I wonder is the modern DCCD on the hatche sti much more efficient than the AWD on the new foresters and imprezas,
Good thread
I'd like to see them go all out with the deisel! 2.5L boxer with 300bhp and 400lb/ft would be entertaning and acheiveable,
There is a crowd in the UK get the VAG 1.9 TDI up to 265bhp!

Dan

there is no reason the Boxer Diesel couldnt be putting out 350bhp
theres is actually a crowd in the UK that were promising me 350 bhp from my 1.9tdi Ibiza engine with a good portion of reliability!!!!
They said 400 - 420 was obtainable but it would cost me about 60% of the reliability

not a hope you must be thinking of FTLBS fo Torque

its what they were promising me.....
I thought it was a little unrealistic to be honest....
I should still have the emails from them somewhere

Yea easy to achieve torque on a Diesel, mapped 530d can be up around 450 ftlbs
But like anything you wont get more power without adding more fuel so kind of defies the point of having a diesel in the first place imo.

I think if you look at the market, which Subaru will have done, and not just a Subaru forum, and realistically ask who is going to buy a Subaru diesel over the likes of Audi A4, BMW 3 and 5series, Passat, Avensis.. ??
i dont think there is going to be too many, whether they invest Billions into Direct Diesel technology or not,
im sure they have weighed up the cost against the end result and said not worth it
Even if they ticked all the boxes, alot of people wont get over the Subaru name, and opt for the old reliables
