Subaru's FT86 test mule spotted

They are smokey off boost,
I had a Fiat Bravo TD100 that I wound the fuel pump way up and turned the turbo up from 13psi (0.9bar) to 22psi (1.6 bar)
That lasted a few months! untill the turbo failed,
There was literally a tube of smoke out of the back box untill she came on boost,
My 200bhp golf is not smokey at all!
I reckon a supercharger as well as the turbo would help, much like the 1.4 petrol TFSI golf GT

Thats a thing i wonderd about diesel, i've often come across VW and see them

floor it, leaving a smoke cloud behind them, always thought that aint a good thing. :ponder:

It's just unburnt diesel, nothing to worry about,
Once the turbo supply's enough air to burn all the diesel, she makes the power and make the power,

Good find Dan

So diesel is the way of the future.

no way, no matter how you tune a diesel you can't get a good spread of torque do you always end up getting the torque so you end up getting the power in a big lump. yeah its all fine if you just want muscle on the motorway if you want a performance car for driving forget about diesel

It defies the point of having Diesel, the fookn things drink Diesel when they are screwd up,

I think, (correct me if I'm wrong) that diesel has more energy in it than petrol, It just needs to be extracted!
I imagen supercharging would help broaden the power band,

Potentially my golf can do 53MPG if I drive it handy (very rarely), and if I drive the heart and soul out of her (the norm) she'll average 40mpg which is still pretty good!
I think car companies are in no big hurry to put all there technology into any car at once, because they would have nothing new to release next year!!
ie. why on earth doesn't the very gay (happy) Prius have that very respectable little 1.4 D4D motor with the electric motor and regenerative braking?? wait till next year!

Dan

Gone way off topic!

Sure if the Scooby Toyobaru doesn't work out! and you still want a pretty little coupe with scooby running gear!
We still have the Murtaya!

looks like a old crx from behind, rather toyotas version

i dont think there is going to be too many, whether they invest Billions into Direct Diesel technology or not,
im sure they have weighed up the cost against the end result and said not worth it
Even if they ticked all the boxes, alot of people wont get over the Subaru name, and opt for the old reliables

The Subaru Boxer diesel is a direct injection unit. I was talking about di petrol units. Subaru seem to have an allergy to them!

@Dagnut: Here's a link to the Gen4 Haldex Performance controller.

http://goapr.com.au/products/haldex.html

Its actually a complete replacement part for the original OEM haldex 4 controller. It fits neatly in the boot and has 3 remotely switchable modes eco, normal and race. This is an excellent mod for anyone with a haldex system who wants true rear torque bias. It gives the best of both worlds as the switchable modes include an economy mode for motorway driving which really helps with fuel economy in comparison with a true AWD system.

ah right its an after market mod...very interesting but..if I fit that to an S3 can you effectively send 60% of the torque to the rear like the Torsen? doesn't seem to say on the website

AFAIK it can send up to 100% of the torque to the rear wheels in race mode. yes its aftermarket but its made by Haldex themselves is is a simple plug and play unit and only takes a few seconds to fit (lift the carpet in the boot, plug out the OEM Haldex unit and plug in the Haldex Performance Part (HPP). The unit detects the speed the accelerator is depressed to assess how much to preload the haldex clutch. In other words it prepares for rearward transfer of torque before the torque is even made so there is no annoying delay like in earlier versions of the system.

I think there is a more extreme version of the HPP which is used in rallying and racing which engages the Haldex clutch permanently. I'm no expert on the system so this is just my understanding of what I've read but either way it is finally an excellent system and much more efficient than full time AWD systems. Given Subaru's survival hangs on the need to drastically reduce their average fleet Co2 by whatever means necessary, they should give this type of system serious consideration, if only in less extreme models.
