It appears like the big end has gone in my Type-R :new_puppy_dog_eyes:

-I prepared it for NCT test (new lambda, cv boots, new tires etc)

and before going for a test added a bit of dipetane to fuel in order to lower the emissions ( I have a decat down pipe with cat in middle section from UK version) and.. then I pushed it a little more on the revs than I usually do just to warm it properly up.
Just before entering NCT - i could already hear a slight tapping at 2.5k RPM.. (silence on idle)
She passed NCT and on the way home it started rattling more and more, still nothing on idle, but getting noisy at 2.5 and higher..
I also noticed it runs quietly under the load.

-My engine has never been abused, always warmed up properly before driving and cooled down after. I was servicing it myself with Silkolene oil every 4k miles .... It was rebuilt by previous owner with a bill for 4k Eur in 2008

Can't find the words how I feel at the moment. I care about this car like anything else.
To be honest I don't know what to do.. Have no money for a rebuild, need to pay the loan and credit card debt first.

I need a car for driving to work, so must buy something cheap as well.

How much would the rebuild be? I'm located in Cork and bringing it to Ali Burrows will be expensive as well :/

I'm gutted for you Peter. You will proberly be looking at 1500 to 2000 for a rebuild, plus you have the cost of getting it up to ali burrows. I've been up to ali's and its a long spin from cork but there is no one better to do the work. I hope you get it sorted soon. :subaru:

Its hard to work out cheaply, no matter what way you go it will end up probably at 2k. You could around 1k on a 2nd hand engine.. i know its not the best idea and alot of the Classic engines are tired now, but another way of looking at it is that it isnt much different than buying a 2nd hand car..
A rebuild i reckon could will tip the scale to 2500..
If you were handy with spanners, taking out engine is simple stuff really. You could look at buying a Newage sti engine 2nd hand, they are a lot better than Classic engines.. strip heads pff it and sell them, [probably get 400-500 for them recoup some money.. Strip your engine and use your heads on the Newage block... its a lot of work but result will be a better engine than a Classic 2nd lump..
Money ads up when you buy all new Timing Gear, oil pump, modine, gaskets and seals etc etc..
You need to take time out i guess and decide what you want to do in future.. The price that these cars can be bought for can make it hard to justify spending 2-3k on rebuild...
If you sold it with engine gone and put the 2-3k engine rebuild money towards it you could buy a Newage Sti... Thats the dilema you face, i had similar, had a block sitting on the ground here costing me probably the same as what a Newage STI can be bought for now

Jasus lads I was just reading about codders misfortune with a noisy bigend
after the nct, well if you think that's bad as you all no im in the middle of repairs after last
weeks trackday I fitted a secondhand motor and it ran great fo 10mins and then it ran a
bigend so now I'm going to strip again and do a full rebuild on this engine as mine was scrap
anyway, by hay thaw the nature of the beast so all I can say is (watch this space)
:subaru:

peter i feel for you mate its a rotten feeling when something like that happens but as ken said take the time out and think what you want and go from there it will work out for you mate

this situation is one of our biggest fears as subaru pilots !

hope u get her sorted

It may be an oppurtunity. Try for price on a forged closed deck bottom end-may not be much more than standard rebuild. We all have a tough time to run a subaru these days, you're not alone in that respect-maybe even try for a small personal loan-payments won't be much over two years on say 4k

Very sorry to hear it, horrible now this after so much has already happened with it over the last 2 years :icon_sad:

Just in case people don't know, diptane lowers the octane levels quite significantly so you can drive in high revs but never put it under any load. It can do damage when people feel the need to 'drive her on' to heat the cat for the emmisions test.

That's true mate. I'm starting losing my patience and will power to keep it after all the trouble.

Are you sure dipetane lowers the octane levels? their website says its totally safe for all engines. Well I must say in fact I pushed it a little before nct, but if it was dipetane that could have caused knock etc. Would it possibly fxxx my big end?

Knock will put big pressure on pistons and rods as its an uncontrolled explosion in the cylinder. However it has to be fairly continuous to damage big end-so imo big end was on way out already. No1 mod for type-r is re-map,No 2 is UK 5th gear.

Thats what I was told, had to be very careful when i put it in as any load under boost will cause knock. It can cause damage but i would say yours was already on the way and that just may have been the final straw.

It would be a shame to lose interest in the car now, hopefully you can arrange something and get yourself a new engine. A second hand newage sti bottem end might be a good way to go, even throw a 2.5 crank into it and you're laughing

I'm at this stage where 3 grands are taking my car today as it stands. EVERYTHING else on this Type-R is top class.
For the last 6 months since putting the Harvey Smiths ported headers and mapping by Simon, I've been blown away by the way she was running. Never expected this to happen.

As I said at this stage I'm not even looking at her. :new_puppy_dog_eyes: Hope this will pass soon.
