thinking of a legacy

looking for opinions, ive had imprezas for years now, from basic classic wrx's to tuned type-r's,currently have 01 bug wrx which has been breking my heart since i bought it. been trying to get to the bottom of a low boost issue and once i get it sorted im thinking of moving it on. never had a b4 legacy but drove 1 recently and liked it alot, been looking around and they seem great value for alot of car. so just wondering how reliable etc they are and would they be a good buy

maybe, ive tried a few of the ovious things and they havent sorted it, it was on the rollers last year trying to map it and it spun a bearing. kinda sick of this car now to be honest, had no luck with it. time for a change im thinking

I love B4's,more comfortable than any audi or vw to drive and very well specced for the money-i actually sold my first one and ended up buying another because theres nothing to compare for the money. First and second gears will feel a little sluggish compared to an Sti impreza but third and fourth will raise an eyebrow with the way they keep pulling. Stay away from ones that have been messed with imo-standard cars well serviced and properly run will be reliable. Aero kit is desirable-i think they look terrible without it,standard brakes are rubbish but 4 pots arent hugely expensive. Common faults are knock sensor,o2 sensor and maf.

thanks for that guys, thinking if il get one il try to get it as standard as i can, seen a few on donedeal and they seem very cheap, bit too good to be true. what kind of issues do you see with them dave??

There not to good to be true, as said above they are above any Audi or Beemer but they can be temperamental with boost problems and will cost a lot in petrol if run every day.

Much the same as any impreza only the impreza won't give that much trouble but there still 2.0 l turbo petrol cars that no one wants, that's why there cheap.

nearly every impreza ive had ive always had some issue with sensors, boost probs etc so was hoping the b4 would be less trouble. but i suppose both cars are closely related to each other. dont know what il do now,in 2 minds :ponder2:

Buy a good one and then crucially-leave it alone! I've had two B4s over the past 5 years-nothing major has gone wrong. Couple of o2 sensors in each one,and knock sensor in one and arb rubbers in both. No part i put in cost more than €140

I think we all know how my transition from Impreza to Legacy went

i suppose really it can be down to luck to. ive owned imprezas that were thrashed and only gave small probs, other ones that were mint and blew engines etc. you never really know what your buying. so il get my own boosting right and then il see what il do, might drive a few b4's and then make my mind up. :subaru:

Exactly, second hand cars are a risk, buy the cleanest one you can afford, look after it and hope for the best!
I had a B4 for 3 or 4 years and it served me well, its still doin the rounds!! I would recomend one anyway from my experience with them.

ya,if i can get a good one thats standard i wouldnt be doing much to it, i suppose exhaust system, air filter, remap and leave it at that, are the b4's easy to map??

true, the only prob with that is who can you trust, someone could say its been mapped and it might have nothing done or worse, been mapped badly. but i suppose a test drive would tell alot. its always piece of mind to get it done yourself,at least id know then.

Not that many people mapping legacy's so easily enough found out, if mapped badly then test drive should show signs, best bet go view, drive some, every car is different and has different history.
If already mapped you could upgrade some stuff and tweak map.

ya,that true. who can map them here? couture?? think i read a post before from nick saying he couldnt do pre 00,but i could be wrong.

Yeah couture do it, sti tuning use bob rawle to map cars, I think 2 others mapping for some reason but unsure if they map B4's.
