Thinking of buying another impreza

Ive had two wrx's before a 93 and a 94 some years ago. I have about 3-4k to spend on a car and im thinking maybe another impreza would be good. Im thinking either a Type R or else a newer type of Wrx or Wrx Sti, 2001 - 2003 kind of model. Any opinions on how these compare would be great. From my somewhat limited knowledge id think the type r would be more of a performance car and being able to make it more rear wheel drive would be good. I want something reliable though, insurance and cost of running is not really important. Id appreciate any opinions or suggestions.

Well its not exactly what im looking for but id take a look, is there an ad online anywhere? Also where abouts are you?

For 3-4 k you wont get a newage Sti, there down close to that price but not quite that low.
Id try and up my budget to 6k and buy A newage STI if i could..that will be the most reliable option.
Other than that 3-4k will get you a newage wrx, or some form of a clasSic STI

The cars you mentioned except maybe a wrx start at 5 grand plus. GLWT search :subaru:

Most of the Type Rs on donedeal are over 4k at the moment but ive seen several for 3-4 like the above two which have sold, there is also haggling, it is a buyers market at the moment...

Id still be interested in someones opinion on the differences between them, i would have though a good few people on here would have owned both kinds or at least driven them both.

IMHO.... Biggest problem you'll find with older classics are the bodywork is starting to rust. Rear pockets tend to be a moisture trap. A lot of type r's have had a knock or two as they are a little tail happy and the rear quarters can take some abuse.

A lad on here has been looking for a type r for some time and the general concensus is that there are feck all clean type r's left in this country. Any that are in good nick are not being sold or are unfortunatly more than you would probably want to spend.

If one's been rebuilt... then be sure it's been done by someone reputable with reciepts to proove it.. and not by "me mates cousin who knows his scoobys" .... and make sure it's has been mapped too. Unfortunatley, both of those last 2 bits of advice could put the car out of budget for you. A clean car with no major damage, fresh-ish rebuild and mapped will be closer to the region of 5k or more.

Hope you get what you want though... Good luck with the hunt!!

hi well my sti impreza is on donedeal in galway white one she is spotless and low miles sure if you like give me a call and can tell you everything i no since i've had her and what i had done

I think an awful lot of the performance cars in ireland are in bits at this stage, too many people not taking good care of them especially in the last few years when they cant afford to etc..

well ya but unless you own the car from new then ya you don't no what the last owners were like but any impreza i've owned what it needs i got and not the cheap stuff either

I think its more a case that people are over anaylizing the thing rather then all the cars are wore out and scrap..
Ive bought 2 Scoobys since March and have to say they were/are 2 great cars..
In fairness the newest 2dr Classic is near 12yrs old now, so at the minimum you are buying a 12yr old car.. You have to be realistic, its more than likely going to have some repair at some point, people go on about quarter panel this and qurter panel that on a type r, so what if it has had a bit of fillers, you could drive the quarter panel in with your tumb they are so weak... people forget all this..
Sometimes these threads that are started asking about a certain car are just pure bullshit really,
as if someone sees a car and it looks good, well priced and you really want to see/buy it... are you really going to put up a link to it to show everyone and risk someone else buying it???? I know i wouldnt, anytime i see something that ticks the boxes i get a little be panicy and try to get to it asap before someone else does.. i know its not an ideal way to be, but i think anyone who has the cash in there pocket to buy are the same..
There is one car that stands out in my mind and thats that Prodrive Bug in meath for 6k... that car was definitly talked on, specultaed on and ridiculled for near a year, and not one person went to see the car :dontknow: Load of bullshit really..
You need to decide on what you have to spend.. your preferd spend and your maximum aswell..Then start looking, and forget about starting a thread on anyone know this car etc etc.. go have a look at it, proof is in the pudding they say.
Put it like this, if everyone said a certain car was a minter and great value, would you then buy the car without seeing it????

some very good points there kenc .there's nothing wrong with asking does anyone know this car after going to have a look at it if its a car you want or interested in .i bought the legacy that way someone put up the link and i went to look at it and bought it . get someone to look at the car for you if your not sure what to look for or in doubt. best of look :thumbs up:

I think if someone wants a genuinely clean car, then they can be as picky and fussy as they want. I know a lot of people here think I'm probably the prime example of being too fussy and writing cars off for any little reason but these are people who see pictures of the car and say oh, thats mint, buy that etc etc etc, when they haven't examined the car up close and seen what its really like. I know I am extremely fussy about cars and what is and is not acceptable but thats me and tbh I'd much rather keep my money in my pocket if i'm not happy than buy something that would constantly eat away at me.

I do agree with you in the sense that if you are looking at a 12 year old car, regardless of high performance or not, there's more than likely been some sort of mishap in all that time. For me personally, the biggest problem has not been the fact that a few have had previous accident damage but the issues I've encountered have been the appalling repairs carried out on the cars. Take a type r for example, it gets hit in the rear quarter, the dent is pulled, filled and repainted.. Problem number 1 is the paint work, when the repairer hasn't even bothered to take the window out and the masking job is no better than my 2 year old could do so you can see the fresh laquer line and where its starting to peel. Problem number 2 is the repair is done but the inner arch isn't sealed correctly and moisture is allowed in and over the following couple of years, the rust sets in and starts eating through the panel.

You then have to say to yourself, what would it cost to fix that properly and in most cases, the only solution is a new rear quarter as its virtually impossible to tackle the problem adequately due to its location, and after a new quarter, the car has lost all its originality and therefore worthless to me personally. Even take the purchase price and the cost of a proper repair, and you are on the verge of looking into late bug/early blob STI territory and its just not worth all the extra money.
