Timing Belt

I don't have the funds at the moment but I just said I'd look for a quote to get the timing belt done.
The car has 83k km and is 5 years old this month.

This is what I was quoted (from a main dealer):
To replace genuine Subaru timing belt kit, water pump & coolant - €1,125
To replace non genuine parts timing belt kit, water pump & coolant - €790

To carry out a full service - €280
To carry out a brake fluid change - €90

The service price looks reasonable but is €1125 not a bit on the high side for a timing belt replacement?
or is that the going rate? If it is, it will have to wait another while...

talk to ciaran in asd automotive in dublin will be less than that and a great service he's in the traders section :thumbs up:

Thanks lads. I'll get in touch with Ciaran.
Have read a lot of great things about him here.

Ciaran is The only man i'd let touch my car , dont put the t/belt off though Adrian , its alot more expensive if it snaps and the engine is fubbered

Maybe try and get the parts yourself online. Didnt work out too expensive when i got the parts seperately meself

yeah sure, Tommy, I know, that was kinda why I was looking into it now that it's reached the 5 years...

The car would want a bit of an overhauling at this stage. There is a brake caliper getting a bit sticky on the back, and I have that secondary air valve problem as well.

@Peadar, that's not a bad idea, I might look into that.

90€ for break fluid sounds steep tbh...
who did you get those prices from?

just read that of the main "dearer"...

Thanks for the link codders
I think I saw a video on youtube on how to do it......not sure i want to risk me with a job like that though...! :)
Maybe I'll look up that video again...

@Milo I'm in Galway, so I checked the dealer closest to me, which is in Mayo.

I don't think there is any other garage as big as his down there, KENC, so he has it all sown up......and probably charges what he likes then.

@adrianfa.. did you try the lads in Ballymahon for timing belt. They have been looking after impreza's for me for the last 6 years and I'd not let anyone else near my car. What car have you ?. I got service and timing belt done for way way less than you were quoted on 06 sti

All above prices are robbery adrian. plugs for your car be itro €30 off the net,oil filter €12,10w40 mobil 1 is €26.99 in halfords at the moment, air filter no more than €15 and if you want me to walk you through how to service it thats no problem.belt kit + fitting should go no more than €600. Brake fluid change prob not necessary-I've seen you drive :icon_lol:

Forgot to say there's an independant garage across the road from Burkes in ballinrobe that would do your timing belt for a great price. Lad that runs it used to have a hawk sti so he'd know his way around a boxer

You could go to plenty of good indy places but if you really want to keep the dealers stamps complete, give Eastwoods in Lisburn a call, I got my timing belt service done with them last year, and they also replaced rear pads, think the whole job was £700 or so - worth an call anyway. They also gave me a lift in Belfast to kill some time before it was due for pickup.

Got mine done by my main man in Wexford and I have to say he's the biz :subaru:

Working included:
Timing Belt
Three pulleys/idlers
Alternater Belt
Platinum Plugs
Air Filter
Labour etc.

And I have to say it was a hell of a lot more reasonable that all of the above

Cheers, P

Thanks for all the replies, lads. :subaru:

@gerry I hadnt thought of the lads in Ballymahon tbh. I might give them a shout to see what they'd say. My car is a hawk 2.0 rx.

@B4 soon Look Sean, it's the auld age....you'll see it yourself, the older ya get, the slower you'll go! I was only thinking about the brake fluid change because one of the calipers is sticking a small bit sometimes. Thanks for the offer of help. I'd be ok for servicing, it was only the timing belt really that I'd think about. €600 was actually the figure I thought it would be.
Having said that, I found a video on youtube that makes the job look fairly ok: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_Dn8OFFhm8&feature=g-hist
codders may be right! Not sure I'd be brave enough to take it on though...

@gtpeadar I'd only be going to Ballinrobe as the dealer is there, Peadar, if I was to go to an indy I'd find someone at home. Even though they don't have the dealership that awful long, i just thought they might know a bit more than a regular mechanic. Like, I wouldnt like to go to a mechanic who'd be telling me that she should do 10k miles between services just because other newer cars do. I'd be thinking that he doesnt know an awful lot about our cars.

@dp639 Lisburn would be a bit of a drive... Might be no harm to check on price out of curiosity, thanks anyway. My service book looks like the day it was bought. It's very clean  but I do look after my car

@pops Glad you've got a decent garage in Wexford. Sounds like you got a great deal there. It's a crying shame that a place like Galway doesnt have a Subaru dealership. The crowd that let it go were useless anyway. I remember going to see a car there about 10 years ago to be told that 'you don't want one of them, they only drink petrol'. I was in no way surprised when the lost the dealership.
