Track day car

So after ?finishing? the work on the front bumper we found it still wasn?t a great fit. I?m happy with the look of the bumper so I?m going to keep at it until it?s right. As this was original a 106 bumper I?ll have to completely cut the top part that has the 106 headlight and bonnet noes shape, this will need to be made straight to work under the Saxo grill and headlights. Thanks to Dec for calling over Monday night and getting my headlight blanks all mounted up[emoji106]

This is the new bumper beside the old bashed up VTS bumper.

Last night I just started to remodel the top of the bumper. I have no idea if this will be a success as my fiberglass experience is very limited, but I?m interested in learning.

I put out a few adds looking for a new OZ rim but no luck yet. However I was contacted with an offer of a brand new set of Fox Racing rims at an absolute bargain! I won?t mention cost but they cost less than getting one new OZ shipped from UK.

I?m still on the look out for 1 OZ Superturismo GT in silver 4x108 6.5? ET18
It would be nice to complete the set.

Hopefully I won?t need much more after this. It?s just to form a straight finish under the lights. Painful but hopefully worth the grief[emoji51]

From experience Adrian Fox rims are sh*t, had them on a civic many moons ago and they kept buckling on even a minor pothole, maybe Fox racing rims will be better,

Ps, love this blog, we do read it so keep it going????

Cheers! ya I know they wouldn?t be my first choice but couldn?t pass them at that price. The guy I bought them from uses them on his rally car without issue so I will be hoping id give them less abuse. Saying that even the OZ?s couldn?t take a slap from a BMW[emoji23][emoji23]

I lifted the number this afternoon to have a look and it worked out quite well. I marked the outline and cut away any unnecessary parts.

When offering up the bumper it now sits a lot better under the headlights and grill. I can now address the arch lines at the side, which are a mile off.

As you can see the arch lines are absolutely Pooh! Not saying I?ll make it much better, but I?ll try.

YES! It probably would be easier to just buy the correct bumper and fork out cash.. but I found this one for pennies and am on a mission to make it work. I cut my old bumper to use as part of a new mould. This will take some patience but I?m hopeful it will work:)

Tomorrow I have a guy coming over to do a complete race setup on the car and some corner weighing. This is needed now more than ever as the slicks and stiffer chassis is showing up any little setup errors. I had the car on a scales before and it was very badly off balance. Hopefully tomorrow will make a huge difference next time on track.

Today was a big day in terms of setup for the car. I had been trying to get Damian Dixon over to setup my car but we agreed to leave it until after rounds1&2.
Today he called and we got straight down to work measuring all the camber first. The rear negative camber was way too much in his opinion so be backed that off quite a bit. The front was also a bit much so that got reduced back to 2.5 degrees negative. I never had the car corner weighted before so we also got that sorted. It?s amazing the amount of adjustments made today just to get some kinda balance into the car. The car was always pretty good but I think the stiffer chassis is now showing up or exaggerating and little setup issues. I?m really looking forward to trying this new setup and hopefully with some decent rubber.

So during the week I got an invite to attend a fun rally sprint at Party in the park Mondello this Sunday. That gave me a bit of a kick to get some bits sorted. Only small but time consuming things to be done so I finally got the bumper finished and sent for wrapping. Thanks to Dec for dropping that in this morning for me.
I?m told it?s finished and ready for collection tomorrow. I haven?t seen it yet but this is what it looked like yesterday evening.

No work of art, but a complete pain with all the added and chopped parts. But hopefully it will do the job for now. After painting the head light blanks black I also decided to do the same with the grill. I wasn?t happy with the wrap I done so black it is..

Lots of other small bits done including my top mount on the gearbox. This has long been an issue and only ever swapped out for other scrap ones around the shed. This is now a proper Vibra Technics competition mount.

Hopefully I get everything sorted for Sunday but if not, I?m definitely going to the speed freaks track day on the 3rd of June with some nice fresh rubber. Mission sub 2:00 is on once it?s dry[emoji51]
2:00.87 to beat[emoji1696]

Yesterday we headed down to Speed Freaks Track Day at Mondello Park. We were very lucky with the weather as the track was pretty much dry all day. Sadly typical of Bank Holiday track days the traffic on track was huge, and track manners was lacking by a small few who wanted to block and try race[emoji28]
I ran the car on three different sets of tyres starting on the AO50?s to get a feel for the new setup and gradually moving up to the Yokahama slicks at the end on the day. With traffic all I could manage was low 2?s before catching cars and loosing some time. Thankfully I got one or two hot laps near the end of the day and recorded a new PB of 1:58.4
I was happy with this but I know I could have done 57?s after coming in and resetting tyre pressure.
My alternator packed in early in the day so I was running on borrowed time at sessions just running on a boost I was giving it from my van.
On my final hot lap the electricity ran out and I just got in the back gate and rolled up to my trailer.
Definitely very happy with progress and have achieved a huge goal which I set a little while back.
At the end of the day this is still a standard 1.6 block with cam? bodies and some head work. It does most of its work in the bends. Below is two laps near the end of the day, first lap is the 1:58.4 and second was just to chase a Twin Cam[emoji2]

Cheers lads was a big mission of mine. Now I know the car can do it so I can push it a little more once I have addressed the few issues [emoji108]

Got into the garage last night just to check the car over and remove the alternator for repair. I also fitted a new J&R shaft on the driver side, so at least I now have two new J&R shafts fitted. I haven?t used these shafts before but I?m told they are built to a very high standard, and just at a glance they do look pretty strong.
Found some nasty marking on the inside of my tyres also, this was from rubbing the strut as the wheel fitment way incorrect. Completely my own fault and I have no idea how I didn?t notice it, but I was rushing most of the day swapping setups and trying to find quite track time. I will have to run 10mm hub centric spacers up front with that set of rims, they are ET 20 rather than 18 but the issue was the Yokahama tyre seems to over hang the rim more than the Pirelli?s. Silly of me to to notice and certainly didn?t help times with added drag.

I also had some issues with my gear shifter cable and was struggling to find 3rd gear. While resolving this I removed the cold air feed from the bodies for access. Again rushing back onto track I forgot to replace this which also wouldn?t have helped my cause. Sounds like I?m making excuses for not going faster when in truth I?m delighted with the time, but at least I feel there is a realistic chance of getting even faster.

Few have asked about some of the aero mods and if they made a difference. 100% yes as the car isn?t trying to lift into the left kink going into 7A. That was the area I wanted to improve without fitting a large wing which would also cause drag. On reflection I?m happy out and currently addressing all issues found from testing to further improve myself and the car.
I?ll look forward to Kirkistown on the 22nd of June for rounds 5&6 of the championship, hopefully I?ll make amends for my poor performance back in March.

Emptying out the SD card today so I stuck together some onboard with traffic. I didn?t encounter as much bad driving as others thankfully.

One of the main issues from the last track day was the alternator failure. Not sure exactly what caused it but in fairness it?s been in it since day one so I guess everything has a life span.

It couldn?t be repaired as the stator was damaged, only option was to get a new one. Thanks to Dec for sourcing me with a new unit at a very reasonable price. I also fitted a new tensioner and belt while at it.

The other issue was the rubbing on the front struts. I always hate the idea of spacers, but I picked up some 10mm hub centric spacers with longer studs. These fit and work perfect, leaving a good gap and filling the arch a lot better up front.

I?ll need to fit some forward facing lights as I have removed original units, for no other reason other than it?s in the regulations.

Been a while since I have been on here to be honest, been a bit distracted with work and family holidays. Since my last outings in Kirkistown I have discovered some over heating issues which was causing some power losses. Much of this was due to my new front bumper just not being designed correctly to get the air where it?s needed. During the first race this bumper was damaged so it?s time to scrap it and start again.
It wasn?t a bad weekend in total with two podium finishes in class, but the car just didn?t feel right as the temps risen during the race. I also split a drive boot which covered the driver side wheel and brake disc in grease.
The last two rounds of the championship are the Leinster Trophy in September. After missing the July meeting this will be my first race in Mondello for 2019. Pity really as the car is more suited for the shorter more technical circuit.
I have just started some prep work in the car for this and it?s mostly to improve heating and some rear downforce.

This is the new rear spoiler I have fitted to help keep a little pressure on the rear and hopefully help heat the rear tires. I think it?s original a 205 Maxi Motorsport spoiler which I have adapted for the Saxo. I have also reenforced it using 6mm bar from end to end as I didn?t like the plug setup for the end plates.

I also found a full car which I?ll be using to make all new fiberglass panels for 2020 season.

Today I made a start on fitting a new 16 row oil cooler. I never used one before but as I have bigger plans for 2020, this will always be needed and should further help my engine temps.

This will be the last year this car will be a NA 1600. I have already started making plans to Super Charge the car for next year. I will need to run a restrictor as the car could potentially have more power than it can use and basically break itself. I know this could cause a little more stress in places but I?m up for the challenge.
Parts are already being picked up in Germany for this thanks to Dec..
the GSXR bodies will be replaced with the C2 VTS alloy Manifold with adaptor plate for Clio RS throttle body, this will also use the Clio RS injectors.

I was looking at using the M45 Charger but have since decided to go Rotrex for this job. The plan is to have the car around 260 BHP per tonne. Needless to say after doing the sub 2:00 around Mondello with a 1:58, I?m now hoping I can get the car into a 1:55 and yes a 1:55.99 counts;)
Loads more little bits planned for this car, it?s definitely becoming a bigger mission than I ever thought it would. But I?m enjoying all the time and love competing in a car that I have bolted together myself as the sense of achievement is pretty cool. Any goals I set myself this year I have achieved but there is only so much I can do with such a small amount of power and it?s time for a little more grunt;)

Finally got back to the car this weekend. Needed a big push to get ready for the Leinster Trophy weekend, and hopefully get some testing in before. I got the bumper from the spare shell and completely skint it. As it turns out it?s way lighter than the poxy fiberglass yoak I created:)
I wanted to make a new splitter so I got a new sheet of 1.2 aluminum and got cutting.

I finished off the oil cooler and built some boxing around the rads to help force the air in.

Adjusted the rear ride height one click on the bags. This was advice I received from some guys in the UK. It should hopefully help with the rear low speed stability issues. I actually think it looks way better too.
