Trackday aftermath

Was there anyone that suffered any major losses this time around? I didnt hear of much only Joe(i think) with the gen1 s2 legacy, had some issues and needed to go home early. I wrecked my tyres(Matadors!) and need to rebuild my calipers, next time ill bring a proper set of track day capable tires and pads. Apart from that nothing else went wrong. Roll on next time. With all the recent suspension mods it really highlighted the areas to change, springs are way to soft and she was understeering like crazy because of the shitty tires, was predictable but losing to much speed in the corners. Also Leather seat upgrade, not so good for track! I might source a cheap STI seat to drop the seat position a bit and provide a bit more support for trackdays

first time I ever did a tracday that I didn't set fire to my calipers :multijump: I had no issues at all both cars were flawless thank god, just fond of the juice tank and a half in both cars roll on the next one

your mate seemed to smoke the front pads alright at the start of the day, or were they just new pads breaking in?

just new pads dan they were fine after that

thats what i thought. this is how my front left looked after friday:

im guessing thats just road tyres not being up to the task, would you get anything like this with track tyres? I know she's a heavy car so a lot of abuse on the tyres and brakes. just trying to get something organised for next time well in advance :)

that's caused by over driving dan!! you need to stay off the power until the front has turned in fully then get on the power by the looks of those tyres you were on the power to early and the car was pushing the nose and eating the tyres

I reckon that more geometry and too much steering lock than anything as there is still loads of thread left inside of the tyre, Some negative camber will help.
Lets be honest those tyres arent worth a fu*k. A good set of road tyres or track tyres are the only job

Thanks for the advice lads, there was a lot fitted to the car in the last few weeks suspension wise. and i never had a chance to get a proper alignment/geo-setup so im sure that didnt help. Those tyres were mighty on the road just pure muck with any heat in them!

I hear ya Dec, i guess i was always trying to get back on the power too early, but thats the only way i seemed to be able to carry speed out of the corner, mucho more pratice needed i guess on track to figure it out and mondello is not the easiest track for a big 1500kg girl to master! Whens the next rack day!

in a heavy car you need to keep all your inputs simple don't forget the basic physics of it ,any object travelling at speed only wants to go straight this is worse in a heavy car because you have so much inertia my car is the same at about 1400 kgs what you need to do is brake in a straight line then start to turn just as you are coming off the brakes this keeps the front wheels loaded and stops under steer then after the apex as you straighten the steering you only come on the power when you don't have to lift again I guarantee if you do that it doesn't matter what tyres you have you shouldn't be eating them like that if driving within there limits

it was better last time i think, with the Vredsteins, probably less power going to them but they were fine after the track day and even passed the NCT 2 weeks later(not that, that says much!) it was maybe more fun this time because she was a bit more slidey when coming on power out of a corner, it didnt do anything for lap times are durability of tyres, but feck it was fun! You learn something new every trackday!

definitely dan its more fun sliding the tail and being aggressive in driving style but its no good for the tyres :scoobyblue_1:

I secretly wasnt happy with those tyres anyway(cheap and cheerful at the time i needs to buy a new set!) so at least i can get some daycent ones now! Goodyear eagle F1 assymetric 2 seem to be the choice these days. ill need a few passenger laps from you next time Dec to get some pointers!

Pads are f@&ked front and back, rear sliders seized and front tyres rolled a bit, freed up the calipers front and back and new pads now she is better than ever and flushed the fluid, well worth it doh

Apart from the alternator failing in the escort it drove pretty well first time out.
The battery died and she was running rough towards the end as a result.
Got it trailered home and it started first go with a good battery.
Next time i will put decent brake pads,15" rims and performance tyres. Also the car had a lot of sidewards roll to it. Must dial that out.
Roll on the next trackday. :scoobydoo:

My only problem at the track far was driving that m3 now I want one :-(
Both cars ran great need 2 tyres on the back of the Subaru nothing left now
Bad knocking from rear shocks (need to be stripped and greased)
Other than that all was good

yeah dec braking in a straight line is by far best method ,espicially in fwd car . had one or two skitish moments where the rear wanted to get round the corner before i did .

after lunch swapped front tyres for back as front drivers side and rear passo semed to be getting most wear , but they were being abused with no consideration as we had a spare set of wheels with us .

at about 4pm , the civic started to find it hard to select gears , so much so it started to become a hinderence to laptimes and we called it a day at 5 pm asnot to do any damage by trying to jam it into gear .

brakes seemed to perform grand so happy out for only her second time out at mondello .

my car had a few problems in the morning couldn't get the clutch to bleed got it to half work so that was good anofe. then the cam sensor blew of fixed that then the rad cap wasn't holding in water fixed that hahaha.

but car handled great considering i spent thursday building the car it had no clutch servo. brake fluid exhaust coilovers rear camber arm bushs and a huge list haha was 2 in the morning i got it finished with few Little bits still to do.

was nice to be out on track with relaxed people if you were faster they moved as did i will be at the nxt 1

car went great, even managed 14 mpg :goodjob:
still think something nimble and fwd is more fun (keiths 106), had too come back in thou, was goanna get carried away with it.

an old pic of the m3 when it was nearly new at the ring
