Tracking - Geometry Settings Etc

Have just replaced my 18" wheels with 17" and it makes such a difference to drive & handling, like a new car really.
Having only now seen the inside of the front tyres that came off the car I know I need the car tracked, and from previous posts it seems like Advance are just as good as anywhere to do this.
Question is - what are the benefits to getting the geometry setup differently, I know absolutely nothing about this. I know to expect harder wear on the tyres but thats about it. Can I get better turn-in (less understeer)? And I assume with different settings it will still pass NCT for tracking?

Cheers,
Brian.
