Hi guys.

I've got a question that keeps troubling me for a while.
What's going on with the STI engines in GC8 (especially in the type-Rs)?
After some affairs I've been through, I'm back on the market now, searching for a perfect Type-R ver5-6 for myself.
What I found out is lots of them with engine failures history. Is it the bad care of previous owners, or maybe irish fuel?

I want to buy one in the UK with engine RE-CON done (don't know the details yet) but I'm really afraid about the engine failure possibility.
Was considering Colin's (hen) Type-R in Sale section, but I'm scared when I hear the engine rebuild at 50k miles. :cuckoo:

to be honest m8 when u look at it these cars they are up to 10 years old, there a performance car and there not designed to go up and to the shops. there a raw performance car. Theres bound be problems now and again, as my mechanic said he's seen just as many problems with cossies and evo's. If i didnt have my bug i'd be knockin on the hens door, lovely car and has been rebuilt i think. You be just as well looking for a blown one and you organize it to be rebuilt as at least you know who's done it and it wass done right. Either way good luck with ur search

as chris said,
no more failures than the rivals in the performance class IMO....
best maybe to buy a car that has had the engine done and then you know where you stand with it...

This is a common fear!
Simply put!
1. Big end failure
Scoobies dont like donuts, because all the oil goes to one side of the sump and the pick up sucks up air and the engine runs dry for a while hence killing it before it's time,
Also over filling the oil is worse in a scooby because it's a boxer, I'm not entirely sure why, but it just is!
And obviously a good oil is very important
All this can be sorted by fitting a baffle plate between the sump and motor, or better still a fully baffled sump,
Fill the oil to the apropiate level with a good quality oil ie. Motul sport, castrol RS or mobil 1 and change it as often as you can afford, I do mine before and after every trackday!
2. Melted piston
Irish fuel is different to jap fuel, so detination (compression ignition before the spark) is a problem,
Mapping to reprogram the ecu to suit the fuel you use is highly recomended, most scoobies have an adaptive ecu to cope with a change in fuel and other changes but this adaptiveness is quickly over come by pretty much any engine mods, and our 95ron (excluding E5 which is 99ron) fuel is just to low for the ecu to cope with out being adjusted to cope!
So to recap, A scooby needs to be mapped to suit it's mods and fuel!

Type r's are so worth the trouble, So If I was buying a type r, I would either buy a scooby from someone who understood how important to look after a scooby properly,
Or buy with a blown motor and have a new motor built to your own spec and mod and map to suit and you'll have exactly what you want!
Best of luck what ever you do!
Dan

PS
I love Hen's car, I think it's gorgeous!

come on codders ya know ya want one !!! you can rebuild my one again if ya want :icon_lol: all i get from that autotrader is do i wanna swap :wall: one even had the cheek to offer a evo......... the thought of crossing over to the dark side :049: never :new_2gunsfiring_v1:

The Hens car would be a great TypeR to buy, rebuilt engine recently and had a good long run in time plus the car itself is absolutely MINT

i actually have not drove it since got new car. i keep looking out the window at it, i swear it sulking :icon_hang: had great plans to wash and give it full polish and valet this weekend but the weather would not inspire ya to do anything only drink :icon_jook:

Thanks Dan, you're the best.
That's what I actually thought. Many depend on the previous owner care understanding.
I'm thinking about one very clean car in UK. These are very cheap out there these days.
He wants 7k quid for it and I think he would lower it even more. The sterling rate to euro is very good now as well.
I love Hen's car too, but I'm not convinced about its engine. I just wouldn't like to give away all my savings and hard-earned money to be suprised then by engine blow out.

I was waiting for 2 years now for my Type-R. As Damo (Renno) probably remembers I was going to buy the Type-R which jim-dublin then bought. It's really mint car.
Unfortunately my brother got a cancer at the time, and decided to give everything up to help him. I don't regret it off course. then I lost my job and so on. Now I'm back and looking forward to join your team lads. :)
Just waiting till January to pay the full membership contribution as there is no point at this stage now.

thanks again lads.

Peter

Glad to hear your brother is ok now!!

2500 sounds optimistic - I would say it's a very good price.

P.S. 50Eur sent through Paypal.. registration filled in as well (except the insurance details as don't have a Scooby yet) :subaru:

Sorry to hear about your Bro, And fair play for looking out for him!
Suss out the craic with the hens engine build, have a look at receipts and stuff!
Best of look my friend!
Dan

Pete's rebuild was just a standard build while the hens was a good bit more detailed due to the mods done.

OK guys stop convincing me :D ... emails have been exchanged... negotiations in progress

cheers

P.S. Is it true, that the difference between v-limited Type-Rs and usual ones includes the front LSD diff? (not to mention the rally scoop and quickshift)?
