Type R -v- 2003 Spec C

Have a little bit of a dilemma so looking for advice. The dilemma is basically stay looking for a type r and pick one up for €4k-ish and pump €3k worth of extras into it to make it an animal on track.

Or try to strike a deal for a 2003 Spec C if we can meet somewhere that makes my finances look a little better? And know that if i buy it it will be staying the way it is at first and mods will only be made as funds allow so wouldn't compete with the type r, initially anyway.

How would they compare as standard on track, what is the weight difference, power to weight ratio etc?

The car i'm looking for will be a weekend/track car but I'm wondering if the spec c would be the better long term investment as a weekend toy/track car?

How would they compare l

I love Type Rs, but if the money doesnt make and difference to you, id defo go for the Spec C.
A newage of any kind has so much more to offer than a Type R, 6SPD. Brembos. far more reliable stronger engine, probably run up around 430bhp with relative safety. And that goes across the board for all the newage STIs, then the Spec C is just that bit more exclusive to have..
I wouldnt dwell too much on the weight, id guess probably 100kg-150kg.. but then again put a 6spd box into a Type R and you will see its waistline expand aswell.

As i've said before to ye i think new age be more sensible choice as a more all rounder.

Doesnt have to be a spec c. A 03-05 JDM ordinary Twin Scroll be good enough.

Spec c all the way Rob , could be used everyday if needed and still has a fantastic chassis set up , newer car as well so chances of things going wrong are alot less , and all what Ken said above !

robbie i have to agree with dave here new age cars are far better allrounder yes you will have the die hard classic owners who will tell you about the classic being a far more raw experience and being light blah blah blah ,but at the end of the day if you buy a type r you will have a great track day car and back road car that is it,if you buy a new age you will have a brilliant track car ,a brilliant back road car,and when you want to go for a drive to cork or belfast or where ever you will want to be in a newage that is a fact not an opinion and another thing about newage cars is that the technology has been perfected they had nearly ten years to develop them ,chassis is far stiffer ,brakes are better think about type r,s for a second what mods will you do to it 1. you will fit brembos or equivilant.2 probably fit a 6speed,anti lift kit etc etc .new age cars have all that from the factory there is no argument against technology they are just better ,and with regard to new age as dave said the jdm sti v8 up is the car to do it all,its 90% spec c and 200% type r thats my opinion anyway and i have drivin all of them

robbie i have to agree with all posts above after having a classic for almost 5 years and getting the bug wagon it feels great so much more comfortable, more planted on the road so nuch more of a all round car

Probably makes a bit more sense but the biggest thing i suppose is the fact that the car will only be on the road 6 months of the year and of that 6 months, it may get used maybe 20 times. Any long trips, lugging kids around and daily driving will be done in a diesel daily car.

But you are right lads, the 6 speed, brembo's chassis and general build quality is just much better. Like Dave, people have been saying to go newage blob to me from the beginning but i was adamant on a type r. Which FYI, are impossible to find clean as people with clean ones are keeping them.

Its worth a phone call tomorrow evening anyway and see if we can talk ball park figures which might suit us both

as dave and dec said

jdm blob sti (save money)why go mad if only a 6 month toy imo , mod if and when possible (with money possibly saved) , plenty of car at standard and possibilities are endless .

classics are deadly, and iconic to the impreza range through ralling but the newage are jus a better car in most aspects and technology wise !

..or if it's just a track car build a track car and buy a trailer....you don't have to worry about road tax, get limited insurance...if you can have a second car why compromise?
who wants road comfort in a toy..it doesn't have to be a type r...or a spec c ..you'd never get into 6th on mondello anyway...if the car is stripped and weight about 1000kg sure the standard 4 pots would pull you up fine....you can fit track tyres which will last longer in a lighter car
Could always buy one that someone has started..no vrt is it's just a track car is that right?

I concur, been there done that, new age bug eye, wanted a type r but then when i started thinking about the things that needs to go into it just toooo much to spend (brakes, injectors, turbo, clutch, coilovers.. etc and all the work involved) :naughty: imo stick to a newage, stiffer gearbox, internals, injectors 550 all that can handle up to 430hp runnin safe...

The only type R in the country worth buying is mine but unfortunately I'm not selling :icon_nana:

New Age if you can Robbie. Be better buy in the long run.

Cheers lads

@ dagnut - The car will be both a weekend toy and track car so whatever I buy needs to be vrt'd and have some tax on it for part of the year. While I want to track it, I might only get to 3, maybe 4 track days a year and the rest will be weekend and evening use and attending meets. I wouldn't get enough use out of a dedicated track car unfortunately.

There ya go Robbie, that's a clue in itself, Andy's type r will be up for grabs soon... :icon_lol:

Don't think there is a type r out there that hasn't had some sort of a bang at some stage of it's life
And I know how fussy you are rob :)

as said rob go newage you will probably have a better chance of getting a spec c that has'nt been crashed and you will have a better all round car
