Type R Wanted

hows the search coming along

Still looking unfortunately, been to see loads and most are complete sh!te to be honest. Had money out to buy one a few weeks ago but it fell through after Ciaran spotted a few major things that i missed and there was no way i could buy it then.

Rang about a couple more tonight, one was sold and no answer from the other so I'm waiting on a call back about that 1. Also pricing up engines at the moment for another one which would be nice. We'll see what happens, I'm getting seriously impatient now :wall: :wall:

Cheers Dec, will look them up online tomorrow and give them a call. Sounds interesting anyway

V4 grill on that one for some reason. Lovely engine build though. You wouldn't need to do a thing Robbie.

I'd always have to do something to make it my own, have a few ideas for what I'd do

Didn't notice the grill actually, the rear quarter stickers are missing so i'll be looking for signs of previous accident damage.

The bumper needs to be painted Andy, the owner told me its in a bad way from stone chips. Would also prefer a v6 lip to the p1 lip on it.

Body work is easy and cheaper to fix I don't know why people get caught up in the whole "clean" thing...I know it's better to buy a nice clean car, but if you know the mechanicals are right, it's had a fresh rebuild your on to a winner

Its clean underneath the surface that Robbies talking about Dave. Some of the cars he's been looking at have looked fine on the surface but are rotten to the core underneath. So much so that they're beyond saving. Its not uncommon on classics & is actually the norm rather than the exception to be pretty badly off with rust

@ Dave...

IMO... Classics are becoming hard to come by that aren't rotten at this point. Even my own Type R that was only on UK roads for 1 year and on Irish roads for 1.5 years had a good deal of surface rust on the underside due to lack of underseal on the JDM cars... and the rear PS pocket was starting to rust out of it for no apparent reason... but thankfully it was all cut out when rear tubs where widened.

I'd have to disagree too about mecahnics being more important. A good straight shell would appeal to more over a rough one with a good engine. A good forged engine might set you back a couple of grand sterling... but If you take into account the costs of having to restore/repair a shell properly... and by that I mean... fully stripping it of all parts... getting it acid dipped or soda blasted to see what needs repairing (and trust me this is the only way to be sure you have a shell that will actually last more than a few years)... remove rust spots and weld in a few panels... then get it painted and put back together taking into account the amount of sundries/parts that need replacing such as clips/brackets/seals etc. And before you know it your running into big figures.

I'd much rather find a good clean shell here... get the underside cleaned and sealed and every cavity wax sealed to ensure it lasts as long as possible.... and have to worry baout a rebuild or dodgy gearbox than worry about a rusty/damaged shell. If you look at every classic car (Escorts, Mini's etc) it has now become impossible to find a clean straight shell... and if you do find one they are big bucks even in a market that has declined over the last while.
