 Learn something new everyday  Thats an external waste gate , MOST cars on here have internally gated turbos which dont make that sound.

What I was trying to put across in that first post though was that people that dont know what they are talking about refer to the fluttering/compressor surge or compressor stall as "wastegate chatter"

They all make the sound, internal or ext, external waste gates that are venting to atmosphere will off course be loudest, then ext waste thats plumbed back into down pipe, but the internal waste gate in standard fit turbos will make noise aswell, just far less and not as audible...

The whole mix up i beleive comes from looking at WRC cars, with Proper anti lag, when they let off throttle they stiil had boost and everyone heard this racket , and heard it was called waste gate chatter, then they heard there own car with vacum pipe of dv or something.. let off throttle and they instantly too had WRC cars and thought they had waste gate chatter:)

Thats exactly what I was trying to say but you worded it alot better. I never knew there was actual wastegate chatter, I must do some more reading, being a google mechanic,It can be hard to take it all in at times

If you want that sounds Dan, just dont use a dump valve, thats whats causing the sound ... not the front mount

baz, are you trying to say that i dont know what im talking about or "uneducated" in your words? i didnt say fluttering or compressor surge or compressor stall was "wastegate chatter.

my car or nicks car for this matter doesnt have a waste gate so why would i describe the sound as "wastegate chatter".

i only got this sound by fitting a front mount, i had fitted a cone filter before that and got mapped for it and it only gave an induction roar, so its a combination of both mods that gave me that sound., weather it is good or bad for my car, bob rawle mapped it and didnt say anythink about it, simon (aka ggm) mapped nicks car and didnt say anything about it. so it cant be that bad for the car.

hi ken

if i block up were my hks bov is on the intercooler i will get this sound??

no i was just curious what causes that noise. i want to switch to front mount mainly to see if it offers better cooling for my legacy over the hyperflow top mount.

I think if you just disconnect the two pipes going to your bov it should make this noise if im understanding Ken right

No not at all I'm saying some people. You have been around scoobys for years so wasnt directed at you , as regards the "wastegate chatter" your car does have a internal waste gate. I have explained that already to Ken what I meant I obviously still havnt worded it right. Dont make a big deal out of nothing.I'm not trying to offend anyone.

Just pop over to Urban. They always have the kettle on. Just make sure to bring cake! For the love of jaysus remember the cake! :-D

Duffman, You could try taking off the vacum pipe going to the DV, Put a small bolt in vacum pipe to block it.
That should stop the DV opening when you let off... im not sure if thye DV will be ablele to hold closed against 1 bar of boost etc etc, but you will see 5 mins up the road, Remove the Dv and blank it.

110% Thats what cause that noise, you will even get that noise if you are using standard airbox and do the above, it wont be a s loud do..

Some after market DVs are designed to sound similar, think Blitz are...
It definitly will effect the life span of a standard turbo, by how much i cant say. I actually hate DVs

Is your dumpvalve bolted to the IC, OR a pipe coming off it to a dv?

This has boggled me. In summary, on a standard turbo with FMIC and a BOV, if it's not a recirculating valve it strains the turbo and decreases the life span?

Have I got it right there? :ponder2:

NO...... Dump valve and Recirc valve are basically the same thing..
You have your foot down, you have 1bar of boost being pushed by turbo, you lift your foot and throttle body closes... where does that 1 bar of air go to????

From the factory the car has a recirc valve, this is closed under throttle and opens when you lift your foot, the compressed air can escape through the valve and because its a recirc valve its plumber back in between your filter and turbos so is reused and you dont get any chirp or hiss.... After market Dv are mainly vent to atmosphere... so you get the chirp or hiss... and as Baz bought you can buy aftermarket DV that are recircultaing aswell.....

When you use no Dv or Recirc valve, when you let off throttlele the Compressed air needs to go somewhere so it cant be vented to atmosphere or recirculted, so it forces back against the Spinnig blades of turbo, and gets back through turbo and that gives you the Fluttering sound, its Compressed air hitting the blades that are spinning in opposite direction

I get ya now. So is that "flutter" in Nic's vid just from his DV and mods in combo with each other and with standard system you wouldn't hear it because the compression release would be internal rather than atmospheric?

so the intercooler kit im getting has no bov flange adapter as standard, so how reliably can you run these Subaru's without one? I was planning on gettting an adapter and put it in place but would be interesting to know what it would do without it

Never though by starting this thread it was going to turn so interesting, learned quiet a bit from it  so the plan is decat, panel filter, remap and suspension goodies  i'll leave the intercooler until i upgrade the turbo.
