Hi lads,
I bought a cheap runabout last Friday for €450
Its a 1998 passat 1.8 petrol on english plates.

Went into the tax office today to clear her and pay the duty.
The one in the office was a pure *unt! Firstly , she told the VRT was
set at €640, and not based on 33% of the OMSP as i thought!
She said that's the min amount based on its emissions.

I can stomach that , as the cars prob worth a grand (if im lucky!)..but get this!..
The car was brought into the country by a polish lad last year, and he never cleared it.
I was told that i have to pay a fine of €240 based on how long the car's in the country!
I told her where to go as she wanted €900 to clear a car worth barely 1k
No talking to your one
Anyone have any ideas??

How did she know how long the car was in the country. It must never have been taxed if it wasn't cleared so it could have only been imported the day before for all she knew

They will end up taking car off you and will cost you more in the long run. I am sure all your details are on there system

Have more powers than garda so i would suggest that you try another office and try and get sorted sooner than later

Have seen 3-4 checks each week throughout leinster. Two blond chicks on the stillorgan road last week

:smokin:

When i brought in the DVLA registration certificate, the date of sale was march 09,
she said that they see this as the day the car is brought into the country :angry1:
She also stamped the cert to say the fine was due on yesterdays date :comp26:
so i cant bring it anywhere else!!
just gotta pay it methinks

the foreigner must of went into vrt office and gave its details to get a price when he brought it in, they record the details, and would keep that as a definite date point at which it was imported to the country.. basically your fooked... i think if car is wrote off after a short period after vrt being paid, vrt can be claimed back.....So...clear the car... burn it .. claim the insurance and claim back the vrt .... ;)

Man that is desperate, I always say that the more honest you are the more you get scalded. It pisses me off to see so many yellow reg cars going around for years and nothing done about it and when someone does try and be straight they kick you in the face.
Hope you get it sorted without costing you an arm and a leg
