Lads anyone know welders reasonably priced around dublin area that can do sills and inner sills on a gc8 impreza?

Reasonably priced probably won't be a good job and a good job is gonna be pricey depending on what exactly you need done
Classic car welding do great work but don't think they're cheap

I went to classic car welding and he quoted 25k plus, said If outer sills are gone need inner sills , then need cross members , then new floor new strut towers and pretty much just said if he starts at one thing it will lead on to more

Very hard to get someone to do it properly and most after a quick turnaround in and out. You need someone who’s going to do it right or it’s a waste of money and time . Having used places in the past I just do all my now work now as it will be right

25 is the price of mint car from Japan with change so you really got to ask is it worth it

Yeah with prices like that think I'll be investing In a welder and a course

I feel for you. Best of luck with this. This type of work is mostly done by lads/owners themselves that know what they are doing.

Ouch that's serious money. Have things really gone that mad or was that more of a 'we don't want or need the business so feck off' kinda quote do you think?

My car is there at the moment, he is one of the most talented body work/metal worker/fabricators in the country

, It’s €50 per hour plus materials which is reasonable, it’s the hours and what he finds while working on it and he’s not the type to do half a job.
There’s 500+ hours gone into it so far
Mine has sentimental value so if you can’t commit to a project like that I’d sell the car on or find someone to replace the sills cheaply but you’ll be doing it again in 5 years time , nothing wrong with that either ,Kris just wants to do it properly so not more issues for another 15-20 years

Sometimes there is 2 people working on the car so it’s then €100 per hour for 2 men

This is one side done ,jacking points reinforced also

only after going through this with my blobeye.
Dad has been a fitter/fabricator since he was young, has been at cars/bikes as a hobby since he was a child so has years of experience, and has had me at both since before I can remember. There was still a lot of figuring out, learning, mistakes etc etc.
If you were at that stuff all the time you'd get a grasp for it, but its a long road even for the experienced.
Between the 2 of us we have 1000+ hours into it, and at least 700+ in the welding and bodywork. (left/right strut towers, inner/outer sills, left/right inner and outer arches, proper full respray.... the list goes on)
and to add to it, a subaru is not the best car to be learning on, like scoobysub said, the metal in subarus is paper fucking thin and hard to weld.

But its always possible to learn a new skill and it will be a lot cheaper but you'll be paying yourself for the hours.

As a feeler for the craic dad did up his bill for himself and on hours alone, I owe him 60/70k+, and thats probably forgetting things 🤣 Same as Baz though, this was a job done right so that it would last tens of years, because I have no intention of ever selling the car.
It can be done cheaper but will have to be done again in 3 or 4 years, finding someone to trust and do the work is another thing

Great post , great to read and fair play for putting the time into it , We all tend to forget these cars are coming up on 30 years old , to put that into perspective that’s like restoring a 60s or 70s car in the 90s or 00s

Mine had rear turrets from scratch , rear inner arches , new genuine 1/4 panels , rear pockets, some extra stitch welding and bracing also to try stiffen up the shell as the classic wagon shell is like a wet paper bag with the tail gate and no metal in behind the seats to tie in the strut towers like the saloon

What way do they work it. Do you need to pay them every so often before they continue on?

Yes , the way it worked out was a bill every 4-6weeks and continue. It’s the only way I could do it , working 6 days a week also just to get it done, it’s intense enough and can be stressful with mortgage and other bills that really come first .

The cars there since Jan 2024, communication is not a strong with polish language barrier so need to keep in touch every week and call in at least once a month .

There was a bit of a slow down before Xmas there , unsure what the issue was but a quick visit and a chat sorted that out

In all fairness Baz I seen your car there last week and there is serious work going in to it and the lads did say it will be showroom Condition when done , iv also watched his story's of what work has gone in to yours and its unreal work.

I just want the sills and arches done at the moment. I'm not talking bad of his work he did quote 25k plus but in fairness he said he would be doing everything again that was done to yours and more and giving it back as new from showroom condition. If I had the money and time without the car I'd be doing what you have. Can't wait to see your finished product

Definitely not showroom but Will be tidy on the outside 😂

Yeah look when you go digging at 25+ year old car you don’t know what you’ll find
