Right lads i think its time to invest in a CB radio after seein the amount of huge ariel's on the drive last sunday!

But i have'nt got a fecking clue which one to go for :ponder2:
Iv been looking on e-bay and the name 'midland' seems to be coming up alot.are these any good?

Any suggestions on which radio and ariel appreciated please

im like yourself dave ,ive been meaning to get one but i havent a clue of what one to get :ponder2: :ponder:

There is a good few of us looking for CB's, It might be worth getting a list together and seeing what deals we can get.
I dont want a massive ariel hanging out of the car so something small would be the job

i would recomend the president harry, its the same as the jimmy mentioned by leggy c but it has am and fm. it also has an rf gain which is good when in a convoy as being so close to another cb can distort the audio. when you buy your cb and antenna you will have to set the swr on the antenna. the swr mesures the ammount of signal that is reflected back into the radio instead of going out into the atmosphere. a high swr reading can fook up a radio in minutes. you need a special meter to do this so if you need it done gimme a shout.

ps dont buy a radio that has 27/81 on it anywhere, this identifys it as an english band radio which is on differant freqencies to us and most of europe and is useless over here
and you mentioned midland which are widely used in the uk so becarefull what you buy especially on the net.
the frequency coverage we use over here is 26.965-27.405

Good man northdublin you seem to know your stuff id be into getting one what about maplins (spelling) for a cb they do all that stuff.

maplins are allright, a bit exspensive. were really screwed in this country when i comes to communication equipment. there are a few specific shops but i couldnt recomend any of them cause there all robbin bastards but there are one or two in dublin. cheapest way is to buy them off the net like off ebay but you have to know what your buying. ive bought 1000's of euros worth of radio gear in the past and a lot of it was from the net and from ppl who deal in that area. if you buy second hand have somebody there with a second cb so you can test it cause its so easy to buy a dodgy radio.

was in maplins this evening and they had a midland yolk with 80 channels on it for 123 yo yos and a magnet and antenna for 30 yo yos...

I think we should get a group together and get a group buy, I dunno if Northdublin would be interested in picking a good priced one for us as he seems to know his stuff.

p.s. can you get smaller ariels rather than that big fook off thing??

ill have a look into it at the weekend. ill ring a few places and send off a few emails. :geek:
on the subject of antennas, the small ones are ideal for workin a convoy but are usless for anything over 2-3 miles. they are also harder to calibrate to the radio when doing the swr.
an ideal cb for what ye are lookin to do should have 40 channels, have am and fm but most just have am. the antenna usually has a magmount and should have a rubber boot to protect the paintwork and should be tuned for the 27 mhz band, you cannot just stick any oul taxi aeriel onto a cb, if you do you will hear a little pop and a smel of burning will eminate from the back of your radio :hammerhead:
this an example of the small type antenna but i wouldnt recomend them http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=29678&doy=15m8
the antenna i would recomend is either the k40 antenna or the wilson 1000, these are exspensive but have excellent range.

I hear ye.

This is just for my knowledge now, not trying to be thick, but can you fold down the ariels so they lie along the roof, and does it affect the reception a huge amount if ye do this!

Just thinking of when jap cars come in and ye know the way they might have tv ariels on their backwindows but running along the window itself rather than up off it?? :xmas_cheers:

there ia a major differance between an antenna used just to receive and one used to transmit and receive. the car acts as a ground and if you have the antenna lying flat the signal cant radiate propperly and will cause a high swr. to be honest the best place on a car is dead centre of the roof as this gives good 360 degree coverage. if the antenna is on the boot more of the signal will be radiated forward of the car. the antennas on sat navs and tv receivers are there just to receive and the signal is usually so strong that they dont have to be extended, only if receiving weak signals. there is a major differance between the 27mhz bc band and the uhf tv band when it comes to receiving signals
