What does the future hold - STI Life after 125K ?

Tombusa

Sunday Drivers
Hi,

I'm not too far off 125 km in my 06 STI, me the 2nd owner in at about 50000Km

I do about 38,000KM pa (25,000miles pa).

Car is serviced about every 13000km and an OTT service history every thing done on or before time blah blah.
It was beatifully cared for when I got it, and all I can say is I havn't thrashed it (not be cause I wouldn't :cheesy:, more because I lack the confidence to do it

I like it because it's my bike on 4 wheels, great acceleration for passing for someone who didn't enjoy playing 110 bhp Avensis-Chicken when passing.

Bottom line is - how long will it last?
I don't think I can afford to change it realistically until July 2013 i.e. when it should be nudging about 200,000KM

What are the major expenditures likely, i.e. roughly when will turbo, engine, clutch etc go.

What I'm say is that Im prepared to put new engine , turbo etc in when the time comes; but broadly speaking I'm wondering when this might be ?

It's not just that i can't afford to change it --- how could that be at 1.49 for petrol in an sti.... I just sort of like it.
I'll never own a 300hp AWD car that can be taxed for 900 ever again....and whatever AWD I get next (- i can't go back to 2x4 wheel drive ever again -), is going to be pretty expensive to tax anyway....

A car will last you as long as you look after it....i have a 145 on my impreza 4 track days and mapped for the last 3 yrs and she still pulls like a train, but the oil is all ways changed early and all ways get the best oil, belts etc etc....its also to the way you drive it,if you hammer it all the time and red line well its not going to last, most engines give up,nobody can say exactly when....

IMO that car will last you a long long time. You seem to be giving it the love it deserves with services and i think you will be rewarded for that. The newage STI engine is a great lump. I had a 97 classic Irish turbo, it got lots of hardship and id say now must have close to 200k miles on it. Same engine. turbo was changed. Considering how much stronger your engine is, i would relax and not worry.
You will have wear and tear things like shocks, bushes, clutches etc etc that will be mileage effected but i think engine and 6spd box will not let you down

Hello Tom,

As the lads say it is very hard to determine how long a car will last.

This is due to many factors such as driving habits, service intervals, driving conditions etc

As you service the car regularly, this will add to the life to it when compared to a poorly serviced car :subaru:

As Ken has said the newage cars a very reliable, with the most common problem being the rear shocks knocking

I have seen very little else posted in relation to problems associated with them

Engine failures are normally attributed to three issues:

Oil Starvation
Overheating
Detonation

All three of these failure types can be easily avoided by regular checking / servicing and proper fueling.

Fuel is a killer at the moment, but if you can afford your commute with the current prices, I would not recommend to go looking at a new car just because of the mileage / kms on your car

It might be worth considering, putting together a contingency fund for the car if you thought that you may encounter future problems owing to high mileage
:ponder2:

On a well maintained Subaru there are really no set dates for replacements such as a clutch / turbo etc. With a fund in place you can deal with these items if or when they arise

Cheers,

Michael

Hey

For what it's worth I had close on 250,000kms up on my gt-b (twin turbo ej20 engine) when I sold it - my cousin bought it and it's still going strong, and that was well over a year ago. So yeah like everyone says if an engine is well looked after and any wearable parts replaced in theory it should go on for a very long time.

if it is cared for as by your post it sounds like it is then no reason for it not to last well over 200,000 i have a wrx wagon with 222,000 kms on and i drive it really hard most of the time its been to the ring 3 times mondello a load of times, the secret is serviceing ,i service mine every 3-5k and it is the life of them, and the only thing i have replaced is the box which was my fault..

My 98 twin tubby legacy came from Japan with 118,000 km and i had it at 215,00 in 3 years before some tool ran into me. Oil and filter every 8,000 kms and any niggly things whenever they needed doing and it was running perfectly.

It was also running unmapped on 95 ron petrol for over 2 and a half of those years! Not the best idea but never had any issues.

Sounds like you treat it well so she'll plough on for a long time

Mates father wont' fly anywhere so he used to drive to his hol destination in his Evo 6 (Morrocco on one occasion)... 220k miles later he sold it on with not a single thing wrong with it and i gather it started life recently as a Grp N car. Car was always immaculately maintaned by AMF at no expense and never gave a days trouble.

Maintain her well and have some mecahnical sympathy when driving and she'll serve you well!
