Well lads we need something bigger now wit the two children than the Astra so have been looking at the Nissan qashqai and the Hyundai ix35 so have any of yous any advice on either of these or which is the best. The Hyundai is nicer lookin I think and it's white so really stands out

Of the two I would pick the Hyundai as the Nissan is really a Renault and you don't want one of them piles around the house

Hi Joe,

we have an '07 Hyundai Tuscon which is the previous one to the iX35 and cannot fault it. Currently have about 230k kms on it and other than normal servicing the only thing that broke on it was the EGR valve which was about €350 fitted from the main dealer in CW. Ours is the LTD Edition 4WD version 2.0TD 140bhp leather, with enough power and traction, bigger tyres at 235/55/17... and still returns around 42Mpg average. The one with the narrower tyre and 2WD is easier on juice.

The inlaws have an '09 Qashqai 2WD 1.5DCI... it is a little bigger... a good bit easier on the juice as probably avg about 50-55Mpg and even better on long runs. Residuals on Qashqais are good, especially the ones with the smaller engine as easy to run and big space to haul family around. However, the engines are soft in them... and niggly bits go wrong with them like trim, switches, etc... they're just not as well made and hardy as the Hyundai. Also of course the Hyundai has the 7 year warranty thing, which not only is peace of mind for you, but shows they are willing to stand over their vehicles which our Tuscon is testament too.

Hope that helps.

Dont get a qashqai, unreliable and expensive to repair. 440 quid for a wheel bearing, electrics are terrible, constantly blowing bulbs. i would go Hyundai or KIA in that form factor

Personally I don't get this whole qashqai/ix35 thing. Have you ever considered going for a bigger car? My father in law has a 13 reg ix35 and had a 10 reg qashqai before that. I have a 09 reg Mondeo hatchback. And without a shadow of a doubt the Mondeo is by far the bigger car. Hatchback now, not saloon.... My booth has way more storage space, especially if you take the parcel shelf off. And I have first hand experience of loading both going on trips. And inside the ix35 and qashqai I find are tight on head room if your tall. Now I don't know if your looking at new or second hand but you could pick up a gorgeous hatchback Mondeo for handy money in the UK. Or even here in Ireland now that prices have come down so much. I also had the Octavia hatchback before the Mondeo and again, a massive booth. But I do prefer the Mondeo. And like you I have two kids with car seats and iv had a third car seat in the back and also have had an adult passenger in the back between the two car seats without a problem. And with the Mondeo you keep the driveability of a car...... Cheaper tyres, servicing etc.... Worth a thought!

Just found these quickly but similar mileage, same year....

Im sure if you look around you'll get better prices on both. And the Mondeo comes in 1.8ltr too....

Thanks for all the replays lads, some great advice there. I thought the qashqai would have been a great car cause it was lovely to drive and had loads of power for just a 1.5 engine. The Hyundai is more sporty lookin I think so will see how we get on with a deal. We were thinking of getting a passat or mondeo or a skoda but when the salesman brought the Nissan and then the Hyundai to us for a test drive we both liked them so that's how we got them into our head

my parents have an ix35. They can't fault it. Its a 2 litre. Nice poke in it only slight downside I would have is the sterring feel when driving or lack of(Its very sharp) but that wouldnt stop me from owning one. Getting nearly 50 mpg out of it. There is a decent size boot but not as big or a passat or a hatchback mondeo. All depends on your needs

Don't go for the ix35. Very poor build quality even in comparison to their Santa Fe.

ye maybe so man but that's like saying a fiesta is not as good as a mondeo they are not meant to compete with each other as they are in different price brackets

Her indoors had a Qashqai from when they came out in 07, 11,000 Km later she was broke from drawing petrol to it, at least 100 euro per week for less than 300 miles, both my Thema and the Subaru were more economical than it but in saying that it gave almost no trouble over the 6 years except for a couple of sets of back shocks which were a know issue with these. Idiots in Nissan replaced the failing pair with the exact same ones under guarantee even though I pointed out that they would fail again which they did. Nissan wanted the price of the labour to replace the second set under warranty so I told them to keep the car and walked out the door. Idiot service manager must have never seen such a tactic and came running after me to say they would cover the cost.

She purchased a Mitsubishi ASX in Jan with a 1.8 diesel engine and it is far more economical but nowhere near as economical as a diesel Qashqai, Sportage or ix35 but it was about 2k cheaper than all the others.

I unfortunately had the pleasure to drive all 4 of the above in different dealers and I liked the Sportage the most of the 4.

I know her Qashqai was petrol but it's trade in value was crap and guess who offered her the worst deal of all - Nissan.

Try the ASX as they are about since at least 2011 if not 2010 but it is the most basic car out there in that price range, no auto lights or wipers, no pdc, cruise or climate control as standard and only does 48mpg max as far as I can see. It is the most powerful at 150 bhp and the highest tax too of 330 euro I think but the engine will definitely survive her style of driving over the others in that class and comes with an 8 year guarantee but only from this year.

As someone else said above why not get a bigger car like the ix40 as they are similar in price and have a lot more space, 4 of us in the ASX with all gear necessary for 2 weeks in France was a squeeze but herself prefers that physical size car but we definitely had more space/comfort in my C5 when we went previous years.

Best of luck whatever you choose.
