I have a full exhaust system on my Impreza ,it has a box on the centre section (isnt a cat) ,would this be a silencer?

ok thanks lads ,might get these removed for more noise  ......only drive some eve's + weekends ...love the sound

Is a silencer like a cat?? If so would changing these have effects enginewise on unmapped cars?? Or just make it louder?

No, a silencer is a straight piece of pipe with holes in it and an outside chamber packed with material to absorb the sound. so no real effect on performance.

A cat has a honeycomb mesh in it and slightly restricts air flow, but it needs the honeycomb to have more surface area so it can work effectively. It is plated with platinum and causes a chemical reaction when it comes in contact with exhaust gases. That's why they're so expensive........... Platinum

Cheers for that Phil.
So am i right in saying that by replacing this piece you wouldn't run the same risks on an unmapped car as you would with putting a decat downpipe in place! :ponder:
