wheel spacers bad idea?

Is it a bad idea to put wheel spacers on a car (gc8 in this case)?
i heard bad stuff about wheel spacers...

push on ones i've heard bad things about but hubcentric ones that bolt to the orignal hub are alot better and safer they will put a bit more strain on your wheel bearings like i have either 15 or 20mm spacers on my glanza and it was fine at mondello last time

Wouldn't go over 5 - 10mil spacers unless your using hubcentric bolt on jobs!
To give you an idea, I just changed my wheels to et35 18s from et48 17s

That's the way the new wheels where sitting before I went and got a bit of arch work done!!!
If you don't want to do any arch work, choose your spacer sizes carefully!

Bare in mind you will put a bit more pressure on bearings etc

cheers for the replies not as bad as i thought it was gonna be,
i thought they would put ALOT of strain the wheel bearings.

Just make sure you are not using aluminium wheel nuts when you put on the spacers. Reducing the number of threads the nut can grip increases the likelyhood of the soft aluminium giving way under load.

Any wheel spacer regardless of how small they are will add extra load onto your bearings which on a GC8 are renowned for being weak.

@ duffmancb... Best bet is to upgrade to pre- 2005 newage STI hubs.

@ Al.. I'm not sure but I have been informed that newage hubs bearings are substantially stronger so you may not run the same risk of destroying them... 25mm is a pretty large spacer though and will mess with geometry a good bit though.

I thought all bearings are the same in the 5x100 fitment cars. The widetrack models with 5x114 fitment are supposed to be the much stronger ones afaik :dontknow:

i plan on have a proper geometry set up done once ive fitted my new wheels and spacers as i need to lower the car anyway due to using 215 tyres as appose to 225 is that the only problem you see jamie?

how do all the custom cars (yank tanks) that ya see barry white building ect using massive spacers get away with it?

AFAIK Robbie all newage 5x100 bearings are much stronger than GC8 bearings.

@ Al... Most of the yank tanks with massive offsets are generally newage cars so they probably don't suffer as badly with bearings under strain. In saying that... I'm sure the larger offset compromises the handling as even a proper geometry set up running such wide wheels will never be as good as standard.

Duffmancb is there some reason you want to use spacers like wheel offset or is it just you want a bit of poke on your car?

@smokey im getting a wider wheels for the car and done all the measurements and it pokes out 6mm more towards the suspension and i had a good look around back there and theres a good chance the tires are gonna rub off the coilovers.... i think my options are to get spacers or a new tein suspension that isnt as wide as the stock one.
