When do i change gear according to the graph

I was never any good at graphs.

I seen a few lads at the dyno with there print out saying this was the best time
to change gear so theyl still be in the power range for the next gear.
this stuff is beond me.

so where should i be changing gear?

I'd imagine at 6,500 RPM as thats when your BHP peaks, but surely if trying to keep in the power range then you'd have to consider gear ratios and stuff like that? As in if your cars at 6.5K in 3rd what will it be in 4th. So that when you change to 4th the RPM is still in the optimum range. Could be wrong though.

You've a nice peak power range from 5.4k to 6.8k, changing at 6.8k I'd imagine the revs would fall back about 1 - 1.5k so still falling back into full power range.

the check engine light flashes aswell when im ment to change gear, just wanted to see if its the same.

just curious as it never sees over 5,000 revs anyway

just checked there and my shift light comes on at 6,500. so thats right is it?

What do you mean by shift light? Do you have an aftermarket one or do they come standard on type R's? Either way I'd imagine its just adjustable and so you set it to whatever you want, or if standard then its just maybe set to a certain value, rather than being specific to your car. Cant see how it could tell whens the best time for you to change. But at the same time I would say its pretty spot on and thats when I would change.

Off topic: But any chance you could PM us a few pics of your car? I cant get in to the members gallery area and since I signed up I've only got to see your avator, and from that it looks very well so would love to see what it properly looks like. Cheers

i assume it would have been set by the mapper as its a feature on the simtek ecu.
the ecu uses the check engine light for it, also for det.

il see what i can do for you

I would say change just beyond peak torque-as its torque thats acceleration not bhp.

Agreed, I'd be looking to change about 5600, get the most out of your torque...

Take the example of rally car drivers, you always see them change really low down the rev range to keep it in peak torque and the best acceleration

Do you not change at the top of the torque curve. So between 4600 and 5000

which one is bhp (one with the dots?) :hammerhead:

lol your BHP is the other one, torque has the dots. Torque will always peak earlier and the Bhp and Torque lines will always cross. The Torque figure is calculated from the RR and then an equation is used to find out the BHP at that RPM (wont go into details). So generally speaking torque is a gradient of Bhp.

Offtopic: Cheers for that you can remove them now. Savage car by the way and I hope I can have one as nice in the future.

One with the dots is torque, it always comes in early and falls off as the revs climb

@ Eric, you'd be looking to have the most amount of torque all the time so you get the most accelaration... on this graph, lets say its 1500 revs between gears, I'd say the optimal change time would be 5700rpm so its drops back to 4200 for peak torque again...

forget about peak torque you wanna reach peak power thats why its up in the rev range...you get out on a track and shift @ 5000rpm and i shift just below redline il leave you for dead..same car

Exactly. I stick to my 6.5k recommendation, listen to the ecu too. But if not exactly at 6.5k then it'll be close enough to it, but certainly not at peak torque.

Its why high revvers are so quick around the track..you'd never think a vtec civic with 170bhp would be quick around mondello but you can stay in the power band using maximum power for longer..torque cant actually move the car its just a measure of potential...its needs to be applied with revs.. not saying torque isn't an important figure but if your looking to gain maximum from you car you need to be applying the most power for the longest time..the power band is the only influence on where you shift not where max torque is
