Dan, you took your time! Can't agree with you about any of the above being better with turbos as they're all high compression engines and fitting a turbo would ruin the instant throttle response even if it did make them ultimately faster.
I agree with you though, a tdi is way way better than a small capacity (1.4) N/A petrol engine and can be easily tuned to increase power and torque by 25% with a simple eur 400 remap whereas the 1.4 petrol car will only show a small improvement with a remap. The exception would be small capaicity Honda or Toyota petrol engine but I'd still go for the tdi.
