Re: whining noise at back end

it could be the diff , but more than likely its a rear wheel bearing

Re: whining noise at back end

Would imagine the diff is running dry, Could be a seal gone.

Re: whining noise at back end

Have ya kicked the missus out of the car and taken a spin on yer own?
Haha

Seriously tho likely is the diff runnin low on oil

Re: whining noise at back end

Check your diff oil level... if it low top it up and see if that solves it.
If you wanted you could drain it and check the old oil for metal filings...

After that check wheel bearings

Re: whining noise at back end

pretty hard to diagnose what has happened !!!!
IMO the little oil sweat is not the problem but as above change the oil in diff and examine the old stuff for any filings!!!!

Re: whining noise at back end

so if there's metal fillings in the diff oil then its a bad thing and is the cause for the noise?

checked rear bearings left and right seems fine :dontknow:

I would say it is your rear wheel bearing aswell, how did you check to see if it was your rear wheel bearings or not? As just lifting it off the ground and rotating the wheel wont tell you, as I have been there and have the t-shirt! :) If you want it lol.

Re: whining noise at back end

^^^^^
i agree that it can be difficult to determine wheel bearing wear from diff wear in a 4wd car....

Re: whining noise at back end

Easiet way to check bearings if you haven't already tried this is to head down hill... clutch in... disengage engine to loose some noise and weave gradually from left to right. If you load up either the left or right wheel while weaving and the noise increases either one side or other... you have a worn wheel bearing. If bearing is fooked badly you will get play in the wheel from either swingin out of it if it's off the ground... grab top and bottom and see if there is play... then left and right!

Re: whining noise at back end

rear diff needed a very very small amount of oil
gear oil clean with no debris about
same noise in it now
-would you hear a knackered rear wheel bearing at 30kph?
-what would cause the gear oil to leak where it is?
thanks for all the help lads

Re: whining noise at back end

im getting a similar sound from the rear of my car latley, it happens when im cruising along between 40 and 60 kph..... theres no noise when going under 40 or when you go over 60....weird

Re: whining noise at back end

It won't be as high pitched a whine but you should hear it if it's knackerd bearings... and it can be more audible at low speeds as there is less background noise. What year.. mileage... have you oversized wheels as they play havoc with bearings???? I'd 18's on my V6 when i bought it and both rear bearings needed replacing as they heavier wheels knackered the bearings!

Re: whining noise at back end

97 ra sti v3
50000kms now
17" rota for the last 6000kms 16" before

Re: whining noise at back end

Similiar mileage to my own and Rota's are a lightweight wheel... hmmm ! :ponder2: Don't know fella! If you can hear the noise at low speed as a dull whine and it gets more high pitched with speed... my best guess would be a knacker bearing... otherwise I'm not sure!

Re: whining noise at back end

its looking like it eh
what has me thinking is the amount of noise you hear and there is no play what so ever at the rear wheels :wall:

Re: whining noise at back end

sorry to say its the diff defo happened to my car had to get a new diff one of the cogs was braking down and couldnt get it reconditioned

Re: whining noise at back end

thats what i thought i had a diff an gearbox specialist looking at it i even replaced the inner boots at the diff nothing solved it until i changed the diff. i wouldnt b*****t you as i know how head wrecking this stuff can be. but symptoms are identical to what happened to mine.
